“We’re looking for public design cases that have changed the lives of the people”
Outstanding public design cases that raise quality of life to be selected; entries accepted through July 1
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, together with the Korea Craft & Design Foundation, is accepting entries for the ‘2022 Korea Public Design Awards’ through July 1.
Launched in 2008 and now in its 15th year, the ‘Korea Public Design Awards’ is a flagship competition that selects and widely promotes outstanding public design cases that have improved quality of life. This year’s competition will select outstanding cases in each of two categories: public design projects and research carried out within the past three years.
In the project category, outstanding cases will be selected across six fields: △public design that enhances everyday safety △public design for all △public design that adds everyday convenience △public design that elevates everyday quality △campaigns (newly established) △public design administration (newly established). In the newly established campaign field, outstanding cases such as public design campaigns and behavior-inducing (nudge) design will be selected.
In the public design administration field, the organizers plan to identify and award cases in which administration stands out, such as public design promotion plans, related projects and system improvements including ordinances, and the establishment of collaboration systems with related departments.
In the research category, studies that present innovative development potential based on expertise for the promotion of public design will be selected. The special prize, sponsored by the late Victor Margolin to advance Korean design and promote academic research, will be awarded to research that proposes future-oriented directions and roles for public design.
Victor Margolin (1941–2019, USA) was a world-renowned scholar in the field of design. Following his participation as a keynote speaker at the 2015 International Design Congress, he donated funds to advance Korean design and promote academic research in the field of public design.
In particular, this competition will select outstanding projects and research through recommendations by public design experts as well as an open call in which anyone who has carried out public design may apply.
In the project category, 12 awards totaling 56 million won in prize money will be given, including one Prime Minister’s Award (Grand Prize; 15 million won) and two Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Awards (Best Award; 10 million won). In the research category, three awards will be given, including one Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award (Best Award; 10 million won) and one Korea Craft & Design Foundation President’s Award (Excellence Award; 3 million won).
Expert recommendations and general open-call applications are submitted through the Public Design Comprehensive Information System (publicdesign.kr).
