Permits 32,000, Starts 47,000, Sales 26,000 Units

Nationwide Apartment Completions Reach 40,000 Units, Up 54.0% Year-on-Year


According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, housing permit approvals in April 2020 totaled 31,884 units nationwide, a 10.5% decrease from the same month of the previous year (35,616 units); however, Seoul recorded 4,340 units, a 26.1% increase from the same month of the previous year.
By region, the Seoul metropolitan area recorded 14,131 units, down 35.2% year-on-year and down 42.6% against the five-year average, while regional areas recorded 17,753 units, up 28.5% year-on-year. This figure represents a 22.0% decrease against the five-year average. By type, apartments nationwide totaled 22,616 units, down 4.6% year-on-year, but apartments in Seoul totaled 2,141 units, up 111.6% year-on-year. Non-apartment housing nationwide totaled 9,268 units, down 22.2% year-on-year.
April housing starts totaled 47,318 units nationwide, up 30.0% from the same month of the previous year (36,389 units). The Seoul metropolitan area recorded 25,391 units, up 31.0% year-on-year and up 5.3% against the five-year average, while regional areas recorded 21,927 units, up 29.0% year-on-year. This figure represents a 6.5% decrease against the five-year average. By type, apartments nationwide totaled 37,991 units, up 50.0% year-on-year; apartments in Seoul totaled 9,000 units, up 302.5% year-on-year; and non-apartment housing nationwide totaled 9,327 units, down 15.7% year-on-year.
April sales of multi-unit housing totaled 25,772 units nationwide, up 74.6% from the same month of the previous year (14,760 units). The Seoul metropolitan area recorded 11,776 units, up 30.4% year-on-year but down 19.9% against the five-year average. Regional areas recorded 13,996 units, up 144.3% year-on-year but down 11.7% against the five-year average. General sales totaled 16,003 units, up 48.2% year-on-year, while rental housing totaled 6,099 units, up 316.6% year-on-year. Association member units totaled 3,670 units, up 47.1% year-on-year.
April housing completions totaled 47,827 units nationwide, up 32.7% from the same month of the previous year (36,029 units), while Seoul recorded 7,128 units, up 71.3% from the same month of the previous year. By region, the Seoul metropolitan area recorded 22,254 units, up 23.0% year-on-year and up 15.6% against the five-year average, while regional areas recorded 25,573 units, up 42.6% year-on-year and up 15.9% against the five-year average. By type, apartments nationwide totaled 39,266 units, up 54.0% year-on-year. Apartments in Seoul totaled 5,000 units, up 410.2% year-on-year, while non-apartment housing nationwide totaled 8,561 units, down 18.8% year-on-year.
