Company pushes ahead with flat glass plant
KCC Glass (Chairman Chung Mong-ik), a leading comprehensive glass manufacturer in Korea, is establishing its first overseas glass production plant in Indonesia and is moving in earnest to capture global markets, with Southeast Asia at the center of its strategy.
On May 6, KCC Glass held a board meeting and approved the establishment of a glass production plant in the Batang Industrial Park in Central Java, Indonesia. The planned glass production plant will cover a total of 490,000㎡ (about 148,000 pyeong) and is scheduled for completion in 2024. Once completed, it is expected to produce approximately 438,000 tons of architectural flat glass annually.
The industry views this Indonesian plant as an important turning point that will allow KCC Glass, as Korea's top glass company, to move beyond a domestic-market-focused business and leap forward as a global company. In particular, the Southeast Asian construction market has shown strong marketability, recording a growth rate nearly twice that of the global construction market, and many related Korean companies have already entered the region.
KCC Glass plans to sell the architectural flat glass produced at the Indonesian plant in the Indonesian and Southeast Asian markets, and intends to expand the plant in stages to grow it into a “comprehensive glass cluster” for capturing overseas markets. This Indonesian plant is the first overseas production plant to be built since KCC Glass was established last year, and it is expected to serve as a bridgehead for the company's global market expansion.
On May 20, KCC Glass held a groundbreaking ceremony at the plant construction site in Indonesia, attended by company officials and Indonesian government representatives, among others.
A KCC Glass official said, “Indonesia is a country with very high growth potential in its construction market, with a population of 270 million and plans to relocate its capital,” adding, “We expect the newly established Indonesian plant to become a cornerstone for our entry into the global market.”
Meanwhile, the Batang Industrial Park is an integrated industrial park site within “Grand Batang City,” a national strategic project promoted by the Indonesian government. Spanning a total of 43 million㎡ (about 13 million pyeong), it is being developed with the goal of becoming a “smart and sustainable industrial park.”
