The exhibition “The French National Museum of Modern Art Exhibition: Dufy, the Melody of Happiness” is under way through September 6 at ALT.1 on the 6th floor of The Hyundai Seoul.
This exhibition introduces the all-around artistry of Raoul Dufy under the overarching theme of “the Melody of Happiness,” organized into a total of 12 sub-themes. Structured so that a single principal melody is developed through diverse variations, it offers an artistic experience akin to listening to a symphony.
Every work in the exhibition comes from the collection of the French National Museum of Modern Art, which holds the largest collection of Raoul Dufy, and the selection carries all the more significance because it is composed of the finest pieces that the artist cherished and kept personally in his own atelier until the very last moments of his life.
Christian Briend, the chief curator serving as the exhibition’s general director and the foremost authority on Raoul Dufy, carefully selected key works of exceptional originality from among some 1,500 pieces in the Raoul Dufy collection to organize a retrospective of remarkably high art-historical caliber.
As a large-scale exhibition presenting a comprehensive overview of this precious collection—one that held special meaning and value even for the artist himself—it will be a singular, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity rarely to be seen again.
The subtitle <the Melody of Happiness> symbolically captures both music, the artistic element that served as a source of inspiration for Raoul Dufy, and Dufy’s own disposition of always approaching life with a positive attitude, offering an earnest and profound resonance to those of us living today.
Meanwhile, the French National Museum of Modern Art is one of France’s three great museums alongside the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay, and a world-class cultural institution holding a vast collection of some 120,000 modern and contemporary artworks.
