Alternative Space Loop is holding 'Chanmin Jeong Solo Exhibition: Mass Action,' a show selected through the 2023 Alternative Space Loop Artist Open Call, through July 16.
Chanmin Jeong speaks to the fatigue and lethargy that modern society—one that forces blind, efficiency-driven growth—imposes on human beings. The exhibition reinterprets the bodily movements of everyday life, once regarded as meaningless, as works of art. It records the alienated actions that people experience within a capitalist order preoccupied solely with generating economic value, and transforms them into visual art.
'Mass Action,' an installation composed of eight large fabric balloons along with electric fans and motors, captures a single day in the lives of 64 people. It collects the actions of the public (Mass Action) regardless of affiliation, gender, age, or ideology. The artist calculates the amount of time spent on repeated daily activities such as taking walks, praying, drinking coffee, studying English, riding a bicycle, taking dietary supplements, and keeping a diary. Each span of time is reinterpreted as volume and expressed through balloons of differing sizes. The more time devoted to an action, the larger the corresponding balloon grows.
Technological progress, which once foretold the end of labor, is now creating a paradoxical sense of crisis that it will take away human jobs. Chanmin Jeong says, "We must pay attention to the diverse ways of living that have been disregarded because of the single goal of economic growth." This exhibition suggests that each individual holds their own reflections on life and concrete practices for pursuing a sustainable existence, and it invites us to contemplate together an alternative way of life for coexistence.
