Samsung C&T Opens ‘Raemian Goyoan LAB,’ a Multi-Purpose Inter-Floor Noise Research Facility
Korea’s Largest Facility, Offering a Space to Directly Experience Inter-Floor Noise
Samsung C&T’s Engineering & Construction Group (CEO Oh Se-chul) has opened ‘Raemian Goyoan(安) LAB,’ a multi-purpose inter-floor noise research facility that allows for hands-on experience of inter-floor noise, an understanding of related technologies, and everything from research to real-world verification.
Raemian Goyoan LAB (hereinafter Goyoan LAB) is a specialized inter-floor noise research facility with a total floor area of 2,380㎡ and a scale of one basement level to four above-ground floors, making it the largest of its kind in Korea. In addition to the research facilities, it provides a space where visitors can directly experience inter-floor noise, thereby serving to build social consensus toward solving the problem of inter-floor noise.
In the hands-on experience zone, visitors on a lower floor can directly hear and feel the inter-floor noise that can occur during everyday activities on the floor above. In particular, visitors can experience inter-floor noise by grade and see for themselves how the level of noise varies depending on the technology applied.
In the 10 demonstration units where inter-floor noise reduction technologies are researched and verified, four housing structures are applied—the common △wall-slab structure as well as the △column structure, △mixed structure, and △Rahmen structure—so that visitors can understand how noise is transmitted according to each structure.
In addition, floor slab thicknesses of 210㎜—commonly used in typical apartments—as well as 250㎜ and 300㎜ are applied, allowing visitors to experience and study the differences in floor impact noise according to slab thickness. Applying four housing structure types and floor slab thicknesses ranging from 210㎜ to 300㎜ is significant in that Goyoan LAB is the first facility able to demonstrate the best inter-floor noise reduction technologies and construction methods through combinations of flooring materials for each structure.
Samsung C&T also applied inter-floor noise reduction technologies it developed in-house on a trial basis. In some units, it applied a floor structure that reduces noise while increasing the thickness of only part of the floor slab, as well as a 300㎜ slab utilizing high-weight, high-fluidity flooring materials that are highly effective in reducing inter-floor noise.
Ahead of the post-completion inter-floor noise verification system that takes effect in August, Samsung C&T plans to rapidly verify the technologies and construction methods it has developed so far through Goyoan LAB and apply them to apartment complexes. It also intends to develop and commercialize top-grade technologies that meet the newly revised Grade 1 standards.
Samsung C&T plans to open Goyoan LAB to external research institutions and to actively share the technologies it develops. Through this, the company aims to place its focus on solving a social problem rather than on corporate-level technology development alone. Indeed, at the opening ceremony that day, Samsung C&T signed a business agreement with the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, agreeing to cooperate on joint research into inter-floor noise, the establishment of technical standards, and policy development.
Oh Se-chul, President of Samsung C&T, said, “Inter-floor noise is a problem that can only be solved when everyone—not only the industry, but also research institutions and academia—brings together their respective expertise,” adding, “We plan to work so that the opening of Goyoan LAB becomes a cornerstone for solving inter-floor noise, a social problem.”
