Unveil an Innovative Safety Method
Hyundai Elevator has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hyundai E&C for the application of modular elevators.
Through this MOU, Hyundai Elevator's modular elevators are set to be applied for the first time in Korea to an apartment housing project being pursued by Hyundai E&C. The two companies aim to jointly lead an innovation in elevator installation methods and a paradigm shift in the apartment housing construction sector. Hyundai Elevator recently completed the development of MRL (Machine Roomless) type modular elevator technology and successfully commercialized it. This past July, the company applied a modular elevator at one of Hyundai E&C's sites in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, and completed a demonstration. This is the first case in Korea of commercializing a modular elevator. For modular elevators, 90% of the component parts are prefabricated at a factory. They are then assembled at the installation site like Lego blocks. This reduces work at height (work performed in elevated locations) by up to 80%. A reduction in the defect rate through guaranteed uniform quality is a secondary benefit. In particular, high-risk tasks such as the assembly of cages and car panels and the installation of rails and entrances—which had been carried out inside the hazardous hoistway—are eliminated. It is projected that, with the reduction of work at height, it will be possible to achieve zero serious accidents. The installation process is also simplified. For example, assuming the installation of an MRL type modular elevator in a three-story commercial building, the time is shortened by about 80%, from 36 days to 7 days, compared to conventional methods. For the MRL type, which is mainly applied to high-rise buildings, the construction period is expected to be dramatically reduced by up to 76%, from 95 days to 23 days, based on a 28-story building.
Cho Jae-cheon, CEO of Hyundai Elevator, said, “Modular elevators are an innovative safety method that can realize zero serious accidents,” adding, “We will lead a paradigm shift by expanding to large-scale residential and commercial projects going forward.”
Meanwhile, having successfully commercialized the MRL type, Hyundai Elevator plans to also unveil an MR (Machine Room) type product during the first half of next year.
