‘The 40th Seoul Architecture Awards’
Samjin Pharm (CEO Choi Yong-joo) announced that its Magok Research Center won a total of three categories — ‘Completed Building Category-Excellence Award, Green Building Award, and Citizens’ Empathy Special Award’ — at the ‘40th Seoul Architecture Awards.’ Notably, it was the sole recipient of the Green Building Award, which is presented to buildings with outstanding energy efficiency.
Now in its 40th year, the ‘Seoul Architecture Awards’ drew a total of some 90 entries (including duplicates) across categories such as the international student category. The ‘Completed Building Category’ is the most prestigious award, presented to outstanding buildings that embody the public, artistic, and technical value of architecture and contribute to improving the quality of people’s lives.
Opened in September 2021 in the Magok General Industrial Complex in Magok-dong, Gangseo-gu, Seoul, the Samjin Pharm Magok Research Center is a building with a building area of 1,128.13㎡ and a total floor area of 13,340.13㎡ (4,035 pyeong), spanning 8 floors above ground and 4 floors below ground. It was designed by THE_SYSTEM LAB and Junglim Architecture and constructed by CJ Logistics’ Construction Division.
Architects Kim Chan-joong of THE_SYSTEM LAB and Kim Jun-mo of Junglim Architecture, who were in charge of designing the Magok Research Center, said, “For the main west-facing façade of the Magok Research Center, we applied a swelling, curtain-like design to enable appropriate control of sunlight during the afternoon hours. This form blocks sunlight on the building’s western side, thereby reducing the internal thermal load, while functionally allowing soft, indirect light to flow naturally into the interior. In addition, beyond the emotional function of being able to look out over the city view from inside, it was realized as a practical device that further elevates the building’s architectural beauty when viewed from the outside.”
