Invited Design Competition
To Be Built at the Sejong National Arboretum
The Korea Forest Service (Minister Choi Byung-am), together with the Korean Institute of Landscape Architecture, is holding a competition for the ‘World Congress of Landscape Architects Commemorative Garden Design’ through October 29.
The winning entry will be built as the ‘World Congress of Landscape Architects Commemorative Garden’ within the Sejong National Arboretum, in support of the successful hosting of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) General Assembly, to be held in Gwangju Metropolitan City in August 2022.
The World Congress of Landscape Architects is an international organization involving 25,000 landscape architects across 77 countries worldwide. Founded in the United Kingdom in 1948, it operates through five regional chapters. The World Congress of Landscape Architects to be held in Gwangju Metropolitan City in 2022 is a meaningful event, marking the return of the congress to Korea after 30 years and the 50th anniversary of the congress’s founding.
On June 18 this year, the Korea Forest Service and the Korea Arboreta and Gardens Institute signed a memorandum of understanding with the organizing committee of the 2022 World Congress of Landscape Architects Korea General Assembly for the successful hosting of the Korea General Assembly and for the advancement and dissemination of urban forests, gardens, landscape architecture technology, and culture.
This competition project is the first step in implementing the memorandum of understanding. It aims to select the optimal design to create a garden that addresses the environmental challenges facing the planet and showcases the development of Korean landscape architecture, and it is being conducted as an invited competition.
Five designers have been invited: Ko Jeong-hee (Third Space Berlin, Germany), Kim Bong-chan (The Garden), Park Seung-jin (Design Studio LOSICITE), Yoo Seung-jong (Livescape), and Song Ji-eun (Kennedy Song Dusoir, UK). Participants may enter jointly with up to two collaborators, for a maximum of three. The winning entry will be announced on November 12.
Based on the entry selected in 2022, the garden will be built within an area of up to 2,900㎡ at the Sejong National Arboretum in Sejong Special Self-Governing City, with a project budget of 500 million won to be invested.
