Targeting a 30% Cut in Emissions by 2030

IKEA is moving to adopt bio-based adhesives in order to reduce its carbon footprint. The goal is to cut the use of fossil-fuel-based adhesives by 40% in the production of wood boards such as particleboard, thereby reducing adhesive-related greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030.

IKEA introduces sustainable products and solutions to provide a better everyday life for many people, and it is working to achieve its goal of using only renewable or recycled materials in all of its products by 2030. As part of these efforts, the company has developed a new adhesive solution following years of research.

Since about 5% of the carbon footprint generated across IKEA's value chain is related to the adhesives used in wood board production, the transition to bio-based adhesives is expected to play an important role in helping to limit the rise in global temperature to 1.5℃.

IKEA plans to phase in bio-based adhesives to replace the fossil-fuel-based adhesives used in wood board production. At present, its production plant located in Kazlų Rūda, Lithuania, is using an adhesive made from industrial corn starch in mass production. In addition, the company will continue to develop and test new bio-based adhesives so that most of the board production plants in its supply chain will be able to use carbon-footprint-reducing bio-based adhesives by fiscal year 2030.

Meanwhile, IKEA is continuing a range of efforts to drive meaningful change for the planet as it aims to become a climate-positive company by 2030. It sources all of the cotton and wood used in its products from sustainable suppliers, and it plans to switch to 100% recycled materials for the polyester fibers used in textile products and as filling for cushions, duvets, sofas and more. The company is also working to achieve zero carbon dioxide emissions in its furniture delivery process by 2025.
