Samsung C&T: noise transmitted to the floor below is 40㏈ or less

Strong impact noise from the floor above is barely perceptible on the floor below

Samsung C&T Engineering & Construction Group (CEO Oh Se-chul) announced that it has independently developed a Grade 1 technology for heavy-weight impact noise blocking performance and obtained certification from a state-accredited testing institution.

Grade 1 heavy-weight impact noise blocking performance can be awarded when the noise transmitted to the floor below is 40㏈ or less, which represents a level of performance at which strong impact noise from the floor above is difficult to perceive on the floor below. In particular, this newly developed floor impact noise blocking technology is significant in that it was verified not through laboratory measurements but through actual demonstration at a Raemian construction site where work is currently underway.

Samsung C&T conducted verification by trial-applying the newly developed technology at Raemian construction sites in the Gangnam area of Seoul and in the Busan region, and it officially obtained Grade 1 blocking performance certification for a total of four heavy-weight impact noise blocking technologies from the Korea Conformity Laboratories (KCL), a state-accredited testing institution.

In general, disputes between households caused by inter-floor noise stem from heavy-weight impact noise, and to address this, Samsung C&T has pursued research on a range of technologies focused on increasing the weight of the floor mortar layer and improving the shock absorption capacity of cushioning materials.

Samsung C&T plans to push the technologies certified this time through to obtaining grade recognition from an accreditation body designated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and to actively pursue their application at construction sites. Through this, the company plans to prepare for the post-construction inter-floor noise verification system scheduled to take effect this August. The post-construction inter-floor noise verification system is a revision of the existing pre-approval system, under which inter-floor noise blocking performance was evaluated in a laboratory before construction; it means evaluating inter-floor noise blocking performance after construction.

Samsung C&T stated that, as the post-construction inter-floor noise verification system takes effect this August, it will proactively propose and consult on technologies for newly launched projects and, as early as the second half of this year, will begin applying the newly developed technologies.

Meanwhile, Samsung C&T is set to open ‘Raemian Goyo-an LAB,’ the largest inter-floor noise specialized research facility in Korea, in April. Through this, the company plans to continue conducting research across a wide range of fields—from structural forms to materials and construction methods—to unveil inter-floor noise reduction technologies that break existing frameworks, and it also plans to open the facility to external research institutions to pursue industry-academia cooperation aimed at resolving inter-floor noise issues.
