POSCO Steel Sheet advances its steel business and diversifies its product lineup

‘STEELEON,’ meaning the completion of steel, replaces ‘Steel Sheet,’ a name used for 34 years

POSCO Steel Sheet (President and CEO Yang-soo Yoon) announced that it changed its company name to POSCO STEELEON following approval at its shareholders’ meeting on March 21.

Founded in 1988 as Pohang Coated Steel, the company had expressed its identity by using the word ‘Steel Sheet’ in its name for 34 years. However, as POSCO Group’s steel business advanced and its products diversified, the name POSCO Steel Sheet was sometimes mistaken externally as referring merely to ‘POSCO’s flat-rolled products.’

In addition, internally, the need for a future-oriented name reflecting the company’s identity and its mid- to long-term goals gradually grew. After extensive review—including a company-wide idea contest among employees and the formation of a task force for the name change—the company adopted its new name, ‘POSCO STEELEON,’ starting this year.

POSCO STEELEON is a portmanteau of ‘Steel+Complete+Iron,’ reflecting the nature of the company’s business, which stands at the position of completing steel through surface treatments such as coating and painting applied to materials produced by POSCO. In fact, most of POSCO STEELEON’s products are familiar items that can be seen directly in our daily lives, such as building interior and exterior materials, home appliances, and automotive parts.

Accordingly, POSCO STEELEON also carries the meaning of ‘completing steel while, with its unique surface treatment technologies, applying diverse designs and functions to steel to breathe warm vitality into it (ON, 溫).’

In 2021, POSCO STEELEON launched ‘INFINeLI,’ an integrated brand for color-coated steel sheets, expressing the infinite possibilities of steel. This year, with its new name POSCO STEELEON, the company aims to leverage the various strengths of its coated and color-coated steel sheets to create warm steel products that feel more familiar and emotionally resonant to consumers.

In particular, POSCO STEELEON stated that, as international interest in and demand for eco-friendly products has recently grown, it plans to expand sales of eco-friendly products such as non-combustible and antibacterial color-coated steel sheets and highly corrosion-resistant coated steel sheets, and to successively develop products with new eco-friendly features, focusing on growing into a sustainable company.
