Reflecting its goal of leading global sustainability, along with the status and performance of its ESG management

Establishing a company-wide energy management system to measure and manage carbon emissions

Hanssem Co., Ltd. (CEO Kang Seung-soo), a comprehensive home interior specialist, has published the ‘2021 Hanssem Sustainability Management Report,’ which details the status and performance of its ESG management in 2020. This report is Hanssem’s second, following the first sustainability management report it published last year.

This report reflects the status and performance of Hanssem’s sustainability management, including the internalization of ESG, the establishment of its foundations, and implementation tasks, all aimed at becoming a ‘global sustainability-leading company.’ Beginning with the publication of last year’s report, Hanssem set its ESG management strategy and direction, selected and pursued phased tasks, and is now putting into action its short-, mid-, and long-term sustainability management plans through the internalization of ESG.

Key issues include △reorganizing ESG management governance, △responding to climate change through the establishment of an energy management system, △enacting the Hanssem Declaration on Human Rights and Labor Management, and △creating a weekly ESG meeting.

By area, in the environmental field, Hanssem established a company-wide energy management system that can measure and manage carbon emissions. Although Hanssem is not subject to the greenhouse gas emissions trading system, it voluntarily monitors its energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and plans to establish effective carbon emissions management and climate change response strategies going forward.

In the social field, Hanssem established governance such as internal deliberative bodies and dedicated departments to internalize ESG, and enacted the ‘Hanssem Declaration on Human Rights and Labor Management’ encompassing a wide range of stakeholders, thereby strengthening its strong commitment to pursuing sustainability management.

In particular, early this year Hanssem newly established a total of six subcommittees within its board of directors—including an Audit Committee to strengthen the oversight and control of its internal audit body and enhance management transparency, as well as a Compensation Committee, an Outside Director Candidate Recommendation Committee, an Investment Review Committee, and an ESG Committee—thereby expanding the role of its top decision-making body and reinforcing transparent management.

Accordingly, Hanssem has strengthened its management of financial and non-financial (environmental/social/governance) risks and put in place a decision-making system that enables periodic reporting on its sustainability management strategy as well as review and supplementation of its implementation process. In addition, Hanssem declared its commitment to further solidifying its sustainability management by joining the international initiative of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and reflecting related detailed activities and tasks.

A Hanssem official said, “In this report, we have faithfully reported the status and performance of Hanssem’s ESG management from 2020 through the first half of 2021,” adding, “Going forward, we will establish Hanssem’s own sustainability management system and pursue ESG management while communicating with stakeholders about Hanssem’s social responsibility.”

Meanwhile, as it did last year, Hanssem produced this sustainability management report not as a printed material but as a ‘paperless’ file that avoids the use of paper, reflecting Hanssem’s commitment to environmentally friendly management, and made it available through the Company Hanssem.com website.
