INMOK Co., Ltd. (CEO Seok Jeong-gi), Korea's largest wood-veneer specialist, has launched its Digital Printing Paper brand 'MIMMETIC' and begun an active promotional campaign.
'MIMMETIC' is the world's first specialist digital-printing brand, established under an exclusive sales agreement with the world-renowned Spanish wood specialist Losan Group. By overcoming the shortcomings of conventional cylinder printing, it has opened a new chapter in the decorative-paper industry.
Conventional decorative paper is printed using the cylinder method, in which the same pattern is repeated every 70–90 cm, making the image look artificial; over long periods of use the pattern becomes smudged, so the depicted object typically appears blurry. Digital Printing Paper, by contrast, stores the image of the object to be printed as digital data and prints it with extreme precision on specialized printing equipment at an ultra-high speed of 130–180 m per minute, so the object is rendered naturally with outstanding realism and depth.
In addition, because there is no need to fabricate a cylinder, initial production costs and printing lead times can be dramatically reduced. Unlike conventional printing, where a cylinder is difficult to modify once made, digital files can be freely edited, enabling a wide variety of designs. Printing is carried out by 248 color-ink heads under digitally managed color control, so quick delivery is possible without the complex and demanding tasks—such as color matching—required to produce conventional printed decorative paper, and small-volume or custom production is also possible.
Because MIMMETIC digitally prints the image of the entire object as a single integrated whole, real wood, stone, textiles and the like are reproduced so faithfully that they are hard to tell apart from the originals, earning it the reputation of being 'more real than the real thing.' It can also print, without limit, irregular mosaic patterns and complex shapes that were impossible with the cylinder method. Whereas conventional decorative paper has a resolution of 250–300 dpi, MIMMETIC delivers a far superior 1,200 dpi resolution and a wide range of colors.
INMOK explained, "Early Digital Printing Paper, despite its high quality, saw no demand because it was priced three to five times higher than ordinary decorative paper. MIMMETIC, launched by INMOK, is priced on par with the ordinary decorative paper produced overseas, so it is drawing great attention from the industry, and its prospects are very promising."
Printed decorative paper is generally impregnated or coated with melamine resin, urea resin, acrylic resin and the like to make LPL (Low Pressure Laminate), HPL (High Pressure Laminate) and FF (Finishing Foil), which are bonded to panel materials such as PB, MDF and plywood and used in furniture, flooring and wall-cabinet materials.
