Samsung Electronics is teaming up with a co-living real estate company in the United States to build personalized smart homes based on SmartThings.
Samsung Electronics announced that it is partnering with FLOW to develop co-living smart homes at a mixed-use residential complex in downtown Miami, Florida. FLOW is a real estate company that redesigns high-rise building spaces in major city centers to provide differentiated co-living services.
The model house the two companies recently unveiled in Miami presented a smart living environment in which Samsung Electronics home appliances are linked with various IoT sensors—such as lighting, temperature and humidity control, and occupancy detection—for convenient management through SmartThings.
By applying AI-based personalized solutions, Samsung Electronics enables residents to enjoy an optimized smart home environment without any manual operation.
This smart home works as follows: △ when residents go out, it enters energy-saving mode, turning off the lights and home appliances; △ when residents enter the building, it adjusts the home to their preferred temperature and humidity and powers on the devices they need. In addition, △ when watching a movie on a TV or projector, it automatically adjusts the blinds and lighting, and △ when residents wake up at night to go to the kitchen or bathroom, it turns on low-level lighting.
Samsung Electronics also provides operators with smart home management solutions. △ It reduces the building's energy consumption through optimized lighting and HVAC, and △ automatically connects to an after-sales service center when a problem occurs with an appliance.
Through this partnership, Samsung Electronics will, for the 422 households moving in this year, △ supply appliances and lifestyle products such as refrigerators, washers, dryers, and projectors for each individual residence, and △ provide solutions for managing the complex, including signage products and an integrated operating platform for common areas.
Samsung Electronics Executive Vice President Park Chan-woo said, “Through this partnership, we have laid the foundation for our smart home business in the rapidly growing global market for single-person households and co-living,” adding, “We will continue to advance our co-living smart home business based on the competitiveness of solutions such as SmartThings.”
