A New Museum to Represent Finland

An international design competition has begun for the construction of a new design museum to represent Finland. The new design museum will be located in the pedestrian-friendly heart of the city at Helsinki's South Harbour.
The Architecture and Design Museum Foundation of Finland, the real estate company ADM, the City of Helsinki, and SAFA the Finnish Association of Architects are holding an international, open competition to find a design team for a new 10,050-square-meter museum building in Helsinki's South Harbour area. The museum will open in the South Harbour area of Helsinki in 2030.
Entries for the international design competition are due by August 29. Following this, three to five entries will be selected to proceed to a second stage, where the concepts will be developed into feasible proposals. Participants selected for the second stage of the competition will be notified in December 2024, and the second stage will begin in February and run until the end of May 2025. The final results of the competition are scheduled to be announced in September 2025. Each team selected for the final second stage will receive a total prize of 50,000 euros, paid in installments of 30,000 euros at the start and 20,000 euros upon completion.
The new museum's key mission is to "democratize the tools of design." Through its public programs, it aims to show how design thinking and skills can be used to solve the problems we face as individuals and as a society in today's rapidly changing world. To this end, the museum will chart the history and present of Finnish and Nordic architecture and design. The museum spaces must be designed to host exceptionally varied and dynamic exhibition activities, along with spaces where contemporary design and architecture, as well as historical collections, can be exhibited alongside a range of media.
