Joint development of eco-friendly coatings using LX Hausys' 'Micro Powder'
Noroo Paint to produce eco-friendly bio-based coating products applying the material
Noroo Paint and LX Hausys have joined hands to create business synergy aimed at expanding the supply of eco-friendly products in Korea's building materials market.
In this regard, Noroo Paint and LX Hausys announced that on December 13 last year they signed the 'LX Hausys–Noroo Paint Eco-Friendly Coating Business Expansion Agreement,' with Noroo Paint CEO Cho Sung-kook and LX Hausys CEO Kang Kye-woong among those in attendance.
The core of this agreement between the two companies is that LX Hausys will supply its micro powder material to Noroo Paint as a coating additive, and Noroo Paint will produce eco-friendly bio-based coating products applying the material.
LX Hausys' micro powder is a polymer material synthesized from plant oils such as corn and sugarcane, consisting of fine particles measuring 10㎛ or less that biodegrade under natural conditions.
As a polymer material synthesized from plant oils, it reduces the levels of endocrine-disrupting substances such as TVOC (total volatile organic compounds) and HCHO (formaldehyde) in coating products compared to the previously widely used petrochemical-based microplastic coating additives. It can also contribute to reducing various environmental problems caused by microplastics.
Earlier this month, the two companies completed the development of water-based coatings for construction and furniture and oil-based coatings for automobiles and electronics using the micro powder. Noroo Paint plans to pursue domestic and international eco-friendly certifications for these products and begin full-scale production this year.
The oil-based coating products are expected to draw even greater attention, as they can also achieve the matte-color surface designs that have recently been gaining popularity when applied to automobile interiors and smartphone exterior materials.
Going forward, the two companies plan to jointly develop a variety of eco-friendly interior products, such as kitchen furniture and doors, that apply these coating products, strengthening their business synergy.
At the signing ceremony that day, LX Hausys CEO Kang Kye-woong said, "Through the synergy between LX Hausys' eco-friendly material technology and Noroo Paint's functional coating manufacturing technology, we will be able to introduce a variety of environmentally friendly products, and we expect this to further contribute to spreading an eco-friendly interior consumption culture in Korea."
Noroo Paint CEO Cho Sung-kook said, "To secure ESG-based source technologies for new growth engines, Noroo Paint will actively invest in research on sustainable, eco-friendly new-material bio-based coatings, and will work closely with LX Hausys so that we can offer a diverse product lineup ranging from architectural paints to those for the electronics industry."
