In collaboration with artist Yeoseon Yoon, hanji canvas is replaced with color-coated steel sheet

Dongkuk Steel has unveiled ‘Luxteel’ as works of art in collaboration with artist Yeoseon Yoon.
Yeoseon Yoon is an artist noted for a technique that dissolves boundaries. Dongkuk Steel and Yeoseon Yoon replaced hanji canvas with color-coated steel sheet to transcend the boundaries of materials, combining elements of Eastern conceptual landscape (gwannyeom sansu) and true-view landscape (jingyeong sansu) painting with elements of processed Western scenery on the steel surface.
Using Luxteel’s digital printing technology, Dongkuk Steel fully expressed the distinct clarity, power, and lingering resonance characteristic of Yeoseon Yoon’s Eastern-style painting. The artist rendered fragmented landscape images through a method of overlapping collage and then digitized them. Working with the artist, Dongkuk Steel realized digital works—which express the layered, superimposed quality unique to collage—in the texture of a steel surface. The pieces were then custom-made into exhibition frames at the ‘Building Solution Center,’ a facility specializing in the installation and processing of color-coated steel sheet.
Digital printing is a technology that prints patterns, photographs, drawings, and other images stored on a computer directly onto color-coated steel sheet. Because it can achieve high-resolution colors and designs without limitations on pattern or length, it can bring the creative ideas of designers and artists to life. Dongkuk Steel first commercialized it in Korea in 2016.
A total of 12 collaborative works by Dongkuk Steel’s Luxteel and artist Yeoseon Yoon could be viewed at Yoon’s solo exhibition ‘IN BETWEEN: vanish yet immortal,’ held at the Hakgojae Art Center in Samcheong-dong until October 18.
Dongkuk Steel’s Luxteel has continued to differentiate itself through B2D (Business to Designer) marketing, breaking with the steel industry’s long-standing practice of remaining confined to business-to-business (B2B) dealings. As part of the ‘STEEL MEETS ART’ project, Luxteel plans to continue collaborating with designers, artists, and others going forward.
Yeoseon Yoon graduated from the College of Art at Sungkyunkwan University with a degree in fine arts, and went on to earn a master’s degree in fine arts and a doctorate in art studies at the same university. She has lectured at Sungkyunkwan University and Incheon National University, and currently serves as an adjunct professor at Caroline University in the United States.
