DDP <Circulation of Place> Exhibition
Unfolded Through Media Art
<Circulation of Place>, an exhibition that reinterprets the sense of place and historical value of Dongdaemun through media art, runs until June 30 at the DDP's permanent media art exhibition hall, the ‘Media Art Gallery,’ and on the transparent OLED ‘Media Wall.’
Part of the ‘SEOUL LIGHT DDP’ program to nurture next-generation media artists, this exhibition unfolds—through the eyes of these emerging artists—the stories that have accumulated in layers over a long period at the place called Dongdaemun, from the Fortress Wall of Seoul to the Hullyeon Dogam (Military Training Command), the Dongdaemun Stadium, the Pungmul Market, and the DDP.
At the ‘Media Art Gallery,’ two media art works heighten immersion using sound and projection mapping—a technique that applies video onto the surface of three-dimensional objects with a projector. The first work, ‘Graphic Procedure’ (by artist Sim Kyu-ha), visually expresses the circulation of the sense of place using formative elements. Letters, colors, and shapes generated from the Fortress Wall of Seoul and the DDP continuously appear in variable forms accompanied by both regularity and irregularity. The second work, ‘From a Single Point to Spreading Into Light’ (by artist Kim Jae), conveys the message that the past, present, and future are bound in a continuous and infinite relationship. The artist expresses the flow and continuity of time as something that begins as a point, transforms into a landscape, and then vanishes.
On the ‘transparent OLED Media Wall,’ where eight large panels are connected as one, three works are presented. The work ‘Traveler’ (by artist Supernormal) captures in media art the figure of an astronaut traveling through time from the past of the Fortress Wall of Seoul and Dongdaemun to the present. ‘Journey of Light’ (by artist Ham Ji-won) reproduces things damaged in the past, such as the Fortress Wall of Seoul and the Pungmul Market, as fragments of light gather and scatter. The final work, ‘Strata of Time’ (by artist Studio Atec), is a piece in which a flat map depicting the old topography of Dongdaemun disassembles and transforms into a 3D animated map that holds the accumulation of time.
