Solo Exhibition by Artist Park Sun-min
PERIGEE Gallery is presenting <메아리와 서리의 도서관> (A Library of Echoes and Frost), a solo exhibition by the artist Park Sun-min, through April 29.
In this exhibition, visitors encounter a variety of sculptural objects and devices placed above and below a large, irregularly shaped desk. On top of the desk sit blocks of ice in various forms, whose glossy or bumpy surfaces—created as the ice naturally melts and refreezes over and over—can be observed.
Nestled among the ice are glass panels shaped somewhat like books turned face-down or like A-frame tents, on which straight lines drawn in different places appear superimposed. These are lines the artist traced by underlining sentences or words she considered important in books she had read, then transferring only the lines while leaving out the text. Scattered here and there across the desk are coffee cups left behind by visitors who have come and gone, along with traces of spilled coffee.
Meanwhile, inside a curtain draped beneath the desk, a place to lie down and a pair of headphones await. When you put on the headphones and lie down, sounds such as something burning, pages turning, and a tropical rainforest can be heard mixed into the music, while you can also feel the sound and vibration, a slight warmth, and a breeze coming from a cooling device operating beneath the desk. In this way, in <메아리와 서리의 도서관> (A Library of Echoes and Frost), visitors will encounter a space-time of differing forms and rhythms—up and down, horizontal and vertical, and curved.
The various devices presented above and below the desk in this exhibition can be understood as tools for experiencing, with one's whole body, the plasticity of invisible time and its structure. What matters here is the thinking and action through which each of the independent elements provided by the artist become mediated with one another to bring about diverse interactions; it is through this process of mediation that time, which had flowed in a straight line, finally transforms into an entirely different structure of time in which each moment permeates and is influenced by the others.
