Discussing Ways to Utilize Domestic Timber
Bae Jae-soo, President of the National Institute of Forest Science, visited Gonggan Jejakso, a manufacturer of modular timber-frame houses, on January 21 to discuss sustainable construction methods and ways to expand the use of domestic timber. The visit was made to see firsthand the innovation and potential of modular timber-frame housing, which has been drawing attention as a carbon-neutral building model that utilizes domestic timber.
At the site, President Bae took a detailed look at the process of manufacturing and installing the modular houses, and listened to the views of on-site experts regarding the advantages and limitations of using domestic timber. He also observed the positive impact that off-site construction methods have on the building industry, and discussed the structural safety and eco-friendly value of timber-frame houses.
In particular, he examined a case in which structural particleboard—jointly developed by the National Institute of Forest Science and Dongwha Enterprise—was applied to a modular timber-frame house, taking note of how this material enhances the durability and efficiency of construction. Structural particleboard is manufactured using domestic timber and is regarded as an innovative material that can be applied to a variety of building structures thanks to its excellent strength and workability.
President Bae Jae-soo of the National Institute of Forest Science stated, “Structural particleboard is an innovative material that can maximize the use of domestic timber and help realize carbon neutrality,” adding, “To advance modular timber-frame housing and off-site construction technologies, we will develop policies that encourage the use of domestic timber and strengthen cooperation with industry.”
The National Institute of Forest Science pledged to carry out its ‘Campaign for Anti-Corruption, Integrity, and the Eradication of Abusive Behavior,’ and to do its utmost in research on the use of domestic timber based on a healthy public-service culture.
