Museum Ground Holds Simultaneous Special Exhibitions

<See, GAZE>, <Output of an Intensely Private Gaze>

Through August 9, Museum Ground is holding a total of three special exhibitions simultaneously in its First, Second, and Third Exhibition Halls.

▲In the First Exhibition Hall, the exhibition <See, GAZE> is on view. The exhibition was conceived to present a new realm of empathy and personal reflection in the appreciation of art by combining the hyperrealism genre with literary works. Among the bestselling books of 2019, essays dominated in terms of genre, while themes centered on human relationships, self-esteem, self-reflection, and outlooks on life. This can be seen not as arising from a simple change in reading tastes, but rather as a change driven by the effort to find one's own identity and to establish distinctive and sound values amid a social current that increasingly reflects Western individualism.

<See, GAZE> projects this social phenomenon and presents three artists of the 'hyperrealism' genre, who depict their subjects through objective methods. Before the objective works of the three artists—Kang Kang Hoon, Park Ji Hye, and Lee Heum—the exhibition offers the possibility of 'an exhibition that I create' through viewers' free interpretation. In addition, to aid new ways of viewing, the exhibition does not limit its contents to paintings alone; passages from literary works and books are arranged alongside the works within the gallery, composing the exhibition so that visitors can enjoy a richer museum experience. To ensure expertise in the selection of books, the museum went through extensive consultation with 'Gongbaek' (a book creator).

▲In the Second Exhibition Hall, <Chun Kwang Young Chapter 2 : Blue & Yellow> is being held to commemorate the 60-year artistic career of Chun Kwang Young, the founder of Museum Ground, and the first anniversary of the museum's opening. The exhibition is a series comprising a total of seven chapters, and this exhibition is the second of them. The second chapter (Chapter 2) focuses on works in the exhibition's theme colors, blue and yellow, ranging from the 1980s paintings that were warmly loved in the previous Chapter 1 exhibition to the latest aggregation works from 2020.

What colors, then, make up Chun Kwang Young's blue and yellow? The trends presented are the relatively stable classic blue and the iris yellow that symbolizes hope. Through Chun Kwang Young's works, Museum Ground hopes that all visitors will find our shared longing to return from this period we are experiencing to that stable time, along with positive energy.

▲In the Third Exhibition Hall, artist Kiya Kim's <Output of an Intensely Private Gaze> is on view. Working between Korea and New York, artist Kiya Kim primarily looks into and observes trivial everyday moments, combining concepts, colors, and objects to capture them in flat and three-dimensional collages. The artist's works begin with listening to her own inner voice; through a process of concentrating on the moments of daily life and either participating in or collecting them, she moves on to a stage in which she herself responds to and understands them. This connects with the meaning of 'Object Myself' (self-objectification, self-thingification) as the artist describes it. It is about making one's inner and outer selves appear as a single form—meaning that the very materials Kiya Kim uses in her works are herself, and that she herself is contained within the works.

Furthermore, as this intention expands, her works show how the private stories that begin within herself reach each individual viewer and are completed as universal stories that anyone can empathize with. Kiya Kim says she derived the form of her work from memories of her social self that began with doll play in her childhood. In addition, the styles, colors, and graphic elements of the models featured in American fashion magazines made her current work possible.
