Lotte Engineering & Construction reinterprets spaces such as
the bathroom, centered on an expanded entryway
Lotte Engineering & Construction has proposed new residential floor plans for the future consumer generation—those born from the 1980s through the late 1990s. The floor-plan study was carried out through collaboration with a group of apartment design experts belonging to the very age bracket referred to as the future consumer generation.
Through this study, Lotte Engineering & Construction combined an architectural case survey of outstanding new-build homes and apartment remodeling projects at home and abroad with an analysis of domestic housing trends, and reconfigured an 84㎡ tower-type floor plan to reflect household size and the needs of the future consumer generation. A major feature is that it actively reflects changes in the hierarchy, size, and composition of existing spaces—such as dismantling and recombining the compact kitchen and bathroom—all centered on an expanded entryway.
The floor plans capture the desire of the future consumer generation to carry out, within the home, the various activities that once took place outside, and propose two spatial concepts: the ‘Enter Lounge (ENTRANCE+ENTERTAINMENT+LOUNGE),’ a space of coexistence, and ‘Ego Space (EGO+SPACE),’ which captures the desire to have a space of one’s own.
The team focused on the ‘entryway,’ a space with the dual meaning of connecting outdoors and indoors, and derived new spaces by approaching it from the angle of adding functions that can create synergy with the entryway’s basic functions. First, the Enter Lounge floor plan focuses on ‘diversifying the entryway’s functions,’ planning it as a lounge space that can flexibly accommodate the activities among household behaviors that were previously carried out mostly outside. A distinctive feature is that the space is used for communicating and coexisting not only with family but also with acquaintances and companion animals and plants, and that it can be configured to reflect one’s own tastes.
The Ego Space floor plan actively utilizes the existing alpha room to reflect the desire for an independent space of one’s own—one where residents can live alongside their family members while immersing themselves in activities that reflect their tastes. A distinctive feature is that a space called the Ego Terrace, extending from the entryway, is placed between the Ego Space and the existing living room, completely separating the main living area from the Ego Space so that one can concentrate fully.
