Survey on 'sink bowl use' conducted among 350 adults finds growing tendency to personally select design and features
Baekjo Sink Co., Ltd., a company specializing in stainless steel sink bowls, has announced a new trend in sink bowls based on a consumer survey. In the past, a large share of consumers used whatever sink bowl was already installed, regardless of their taste or preference, but a growing number of consumers are now personally choosing the design, features, and other aspects of their sink bowls.
According to the results of a 'survey on sink bowl use' conducted by Baekjo Sink among 350 adults—both visitors to 'KOREA BUILD 2022' and online respondents—36% of consumers said they use the sink bowl that was pre-installed when they moved in. This is a marked decrease from the 58% recorded in the same survey conducted in 2015, indicating that more consumers are seeking to purchase the sink bowl they want through interior contractors, dealerships, online purchases, and other channels.
This shift in consumers is attributed to the increase in time spent in the kitchen. Among all activities, sink bowl use was found to be the most frequent: when asked about the 'proportion of work done at the sink bowl,' the share of consumers who answered 'more than 50%' was highest in Seoul at 30% and in Busan at 46%. When asked about partial replacement of the sink bowl, 75% of consumers in Seoul and 78% in Busan responded that they 'wish to replace part of the sink bowl.' With the recent influence of apps such as 'Ohou' and 'Jib Ggumigi,' interest in DIY interior design and demand for self-installation have grown, and interest in sink bowl interiors appears to have risen accordingly.
As for the preferred 'position of the drain' when using a sink bowl, the highest proportion—48% in Seoul and 49% in Busan—wanted it right in the center, while for the 'position of the dish drying rack,' 58% and 67% respectively said they prefer to place it outside the sink bowl. In addition, there was strong interest in medium-sized drains, which take up less floor space than large ones and handle food waste more easily than small ones.
An official from Baekjo Sink said, "Through this survey, we were able to confirm that consumer interest in and awareness of sink bowls is rising, and based on these preference results, we will continue to introduce new products with designs and features that offer even greater satisfaction."
Meanwhile, Baekjo Sink participated in 'KOREA BUILD 2022,' where it presented a wide range of kitchen-related products, from premium sink bowls to sink bowl accessories made of stainless steel. In particular, for visitors weary of social distancing amid the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, the company designed an exhibition booth incorporating plants to offer comfort and rest. By integrating plants throughout the displayed products, it not only added enjoyment to the viewing experience but also emphasized stainless steel as a sustainable, eco-friendly material.
The product featured most prominently in the exhibition was the medium-sized drain, which reflects Korea's food culture. It takes up less floor space than a large drain and handles food waste more easily than a small drain, making it highly practical. The company also introduced 'CalmForte,' a hybrid sink bowl of the highest domestic quality. It is a product designed with both noise reduction and hygiene in mind, featuring a Quiet function that minimizes noise generated during dishwashing through a special triple pad, along with a double embossing that is resistant to everyday scratches and a Goni Clearing coating.
In addition, the company set up an exhibition zone for premium imported brands popular in Europe—such as Blanco of Germany, and Apell and Elleci of Italy—allowing visitors to inspect and directly compare each brand's products. It also displayed kitchenware from 'Luena,' a shopping mall specializing in stainless steel goods. Visitors could see a variety of kitchen items launched this year, including the Shine Cleaner sink cleaning agent and a stainless steel dishcloth-and-cutting-board holder. 02-929-4443
