To expand its use of renewable energy, Samsung Electronics will install approximately 63,000㎡ of solar and geothermal power generation facilities in parking lots, buildings, and rooftops at its Suwon, Hwaseong, and Pyeongtaek sites.
Samsung Electronics also plans to expand its use of renewable energy at all of its sites in the United States, Europe, and China (including manufacturing plants, buildings, and offices) by 2020, and to pursue various renewable energy expansion policies in Korea beyond the installation of solar panels.
On June 14, Samsung Electronics announced this mid- to long-term expansion of renewable energy, and said that to this end it had joined the Business Renewable Center (BRC) and the Renewable Energy Buyers' Principle (REBP), initiatives (organizations) that support the use and expansion of renewable energy.
Through the expanded use of renewable energy at its global sites, Samsung Electronics plans to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to play a role in creating a healthier environment.
Starting this year, Samsung Electronics will first install approximately 42,000㎡ of solar panels in empty spaces such as parking lots and building rooftops at its Suwon site. It will then install renewable energy generation facilities totaling approximately 21,000㎡, including solar and geothermal, at its Pyeongtaek site in 2019 and its Hwaseong site in 2020. This is part of the company's active response to the Korean government's renewable energy expansion strategy, which aims to convert 20% of total electricity consumption to renewable energy by 2030.
In addition, in the United States, Europe, and China, where renewable energy infrastructure is sufficiently developed, the company will pursue 100% renewable energy use at all of its sites and will review various methods to expand renewable energy use over the mid to long term.
