Saturnbath (CEO Jung In-hwan), a company specializing in bathroom furniture, took part in 'Seoullight,' an event held at the DDP by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Design Foundation, where it unveiled a sculpture made with its Liquid Acrylic Resin (LAR) and drew a distinctive, enthusiastic response from visitors.
As part of 'Seoullight,' the winter light festival held from December 20 to January 3, Saturnbath installed a 4-meter-tall sculpture called the 'Media Tree' on the first floor inside Sallimteo Hall D. The Media Tree is a giant white object reminiscent of a tree; it is a media art sculpture that uses media devices to display, in a variety of colors, whatever phrases the creator intends at the top of the inverted-triangle tree. The phrases can be freely changed via an external controller, and by using messages that communicate with the visitors gathered within the space, it can be effectively employed to heighten the festive atmosphere. Indeed, visitors to the DDP Seoullight event added to their enjoyment by watching the tree's ever-changing phrases throughout the exhibition period.
Designed by Wise Architecture (Chang Young-chul, Jeon Sook-hee), the Media Tree was made with Liquid Acrylic Resin (LAR), Saturnbath's signature design material. LAR (Liquid Acrylic Resin), a material used for bathtubs, washbasins and the like, is a top-grade material used by luxury brands in Italy, Spain and elsewhere, and is imported in its entirety from Lucite of the United Kingdom. Its warm, matte, pure-white color and its skin-like soft, cozy texture create a high-class ambiance. Manufactured by a casting process with no joints, it is hygienic and allows continuous, clean maintenance, making it suitable for public facilities. The fact that it can express flowing designs that cannot be realized with other materials, and that it can be made to order, is worthy of attention from interior designers.
In particular, the Media Tree presented at this 'Seoullight' festival was praised as a material that, thanks to the light-transmitting properties of liquid acrylic, optimally matched the mysterious yet future-oriented DDP building and the exhibition concept of the lighting festival woven into it.
'Seoullight' is a large-scale light show unfolding across the 220-meter front of the Dongdaemun Design Plaza's (DDP) curved façade, presented four times a day for 16 minutes each over 15 days. The silver panels, transformed into a massive canvas, combined dazzling light, imagery and music to create a fantastical feeling that cannot be seen anywhere else in the world, captivating visitors. This year's theme was 'SEOUL HAEMONG,' presenting the past, present and future of Seoul and the DDP in three chapters through the light festival and offering a special experience of traveling through a 'space of memory.' To this end, artist Refik Anadol and general director Min Se-hui collected data on the DDP's past, present and future and carried out the work of interpreting dreams (haemong) with AI.
Saturnbath CEO Jung In-hwan explained, "I am pleased that the 'Media Tree' could contribute to 'Seoullight'—which made its debut this year—establishing itself as Seoul's flagship winter light festival that draws many tourists," adding, "Just as we lead bathroom culture, Saturnbath will continue related efforts to ensure that the competitiveness of our materials and designs is effectively demonstrated at a variety of cultural events."
