A two-person exhibition by artists Kim Yeon-ok and Ryu Ji-an
Gallery 526, which opened in Seorae Village this past May 4, is presenting <Beyond Time>, a two-person exhibition by artists Kim Yeon-ok and Ryu Ji-an, through September 24.
This exhibition explores traditional motifs that have long been familiar to us, reinterpreted through each artist's own distinctive working process, and presents works reborn through contemporary techniques. Through images that feel at once familiar and unfamiliar, transcending time, viewers can experience each artist's unique sensibility.
Influenced by her late father, Kim Yeon-ok grew up on close terms with ceramics, and the direction of her work naturally became connected to pottery. The artist cuts thin cotton cloth into long vertical strips and layers them at even intervals, upon which she newly renders the iconography of the traditional moon jar. Through this repetitive working process, traditional imagery meets contemporary technique, completing a new and distinctive aesthetic of the moon jar.
Ryu Ji-an unfolds her creative world through diverse genres and colors, using the luminescence of mother-of-pearl as her medium, and is active across many fields, including a project collaboration with Britain's Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. The artist regards mother-of-pearl purely as a painterly element, and through the process of contemplating and exploring the material's properties, mother-of-pearl is endowed with new vitality and character. In her work—where individual entities communicate, form relationships, and circulate on flat or three-dimensional surfaces, and where the multilayered strata of time are condensed—one senses the value and flow of time.
This exhibition will unveil Ryu Ji-an's new work, <THE MOON_WHITE 48>, offering a chance to view moon jars reborn through both painting and mother-of-pearl within a single space. 02-6953-0526
