Seoul Semiconductor, 'SunLike'
'Light Experience Space' for Plant Growth
Seoul Semiconductor, a global specialist in optical semiconductors, marked Arbor Day by unveiling Korea's first 'Natural Light Experience Space,' where consumers can directly experience natural-light SunLike lighting, at the Boromwat Botanical Garden in Seogwipo, Jeju Island.
Boromwat is a botanical garden located on Jeju Island—which draws 3.5 million tourists each year—that pursues large-scale indoor and outdoor 'agriculture rooted in the value of togetherness.' Seoul Semiconductor conducted partnership marketing under the concept of 'lighting that benefits both people and plants' in the indoor space of Boromwat's newly opened plant cultivation facility.
As problems such as climate change and environmental pollution have recently increased the uncertainties of outdoor cultivation, indoor farming—growing crops indoors—is emerging as an alternative. In the United States and Europe, indoor farming and smart farm technologies are rapidly rising as new trends, and interest in future food sources is growing by the day. In particular, demand for plant-growth LEDs is increasing as an essential element in creating a crop cultivation environment, and businesses related to plant growth are gaining attention in Korea as well.
Seoul Semiconductor's SunLike technology is an innovative lighting technology that condenses natural light into a single small LED chip. When SunLike lighting is used indoors, it delivers the same experience as being exposed to natural light outdoors.
Natural light is essential for both people and plants. The SunLike lighting installed at the Boromwat Botanical Garden implements a Full Spectrum similar to sunlight, spanning the broad wavelength range of 380–740 nm (nanometers). As a result, even when plants are grown indoors 365 days a year, the lighting reproduces the nutrients and vitality of plants grown under sunlight while also maintaining their taste and quality. SunLike technology offers a variety of distinctive benefits, including myopia prevention, eye comfort, and improved learning ability.
