‘Re-Born Green Color Steel Sheet’
Jointly Obtained with Samhwa Paints
Dongkuk CM, part of the Dongkuk Steel Group, has jointly with Samhwa Paints obtained Environmental Claim Validation (ECV) certification for its ‘Recycling Born Green Pre-Coated Metal’ from UL Solutions, the U.S. safety-standards certification body.
ECV certification is a certification mark granted after the validity of a product’s eco-friendliness claims—such as the usage rate of recycled/reused materials and the content of hazardous substances—is proven through a third-party verification program. It is classified as a demanding certification that involves a process review of recycled-material content and verification by specialized engineers.
By obtaining this certification, Dongkuk CM has enhanced the credibility of the eco-friendliness of its Re-Born Green Color Steel Sheet. The Re-Born Green Color Steel Sheet is a product that combines a recycled-waste-plastic coating with hot-rolled steel sheet manufactured in an electric arc furnace that recycles scrap metal. It is the world’s first technology, jointly developed by Dongkuk CM and Samhwa Paints. Doubling the waste-plastic coating content served as a positive factor. After completing technology development in November of last year, Dongkuk CM and Samhwa Paints spent a year doubling the waste-plastic coating content. This means that recyclability has increased from the previous recycling effect of 100 500ml PET bottles per ton to a recycling effect of 200 bottles. Its application has also expanded from home appliances to construction. Because building exterior materials are directly exposed to weather and are highly likely to be subjected to impact, controlling their physical properties is essential. Through research, Dongkuk CM has met all of the physical-property requirements for the construction use of the Re-Born Green Color Steel Sheet.
With the eco-friendliness of its color steel sheet products verified through this certification, Dongkuk CM expects to strengthen its competitiveness in export markets amid changes in the steel trade environment, such as the spread of protectionism. Dongkuk CM is currently in discussions to apply the Re-Born Green Color Steel Sheet to LG Electronics’ home appliances.
