ABB Partners with Samsung Electronics
An Innovative Energy Management Partnership
ABB announced that it has signed a global partnership with Samsung Electronics to provide jointly developed technology for energy savings, energy management, and smart Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity in residential and commercial buildings. Buildings account for 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions each year. The two companies will create a platform, forging a long-term relationship to drive innovation in smart technology, smart controls, and smart devices.
Through this collaboration, Samsung and ABB will broaden customer access to home automation technology, improve device management, and make electrical load shifting easier. Smart homes save cost, time, and energy by using connected devices and integrated appliances managed through a centralized system.
By linking the Samsung SmartThings application with ABB's home automation solutions, residents can monitor and manage all of their white goods as well as gas and smoke sensors, energy, security, and convenience systems from a single application on their personal devices. For example, appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines can be proactively managed to operate during off-peak hours of low electricity use, which is expected to optimize the grid and reduce energy costs.
Mike Mustapha, President and Head of ABB Smart Buildings, said: "We envision a future in which we increase access to fully integrated, holistic smart building technology so that customers benefit from carbon reduction and energy savings. Partnerships with leading technology innovators such as Samsung Electronics support ABB's vision." He added: "We connect the entire building with an open, agnostic (generalized so that diverse systems can interoperate) solution, and by incorporating a variety of elements such as electric vehicle chargers, we provide insight into total energy consumption. We deliver a seamless and useful user experience while minimizing the carbon footprint of the built environment."
Alongside their home automation solutions, the two companies plan to expand their cooperation between Samsung Electronics' HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) products and VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) indoor control systems and ABB's HVAC control systems for commercial building and multi-family housing development.
