“Designing future living spaces with Gen Z ideas!”

LG Hausys has launched a design competition for residential spaces and living products together with young designers, setting out to secure a new design paradigm for the homes of the future. In connection with this, on April 16, LG Hausys held the ‘1st LG Z:IN Interior Design Competition Awards Ceremony’ at the LG Z:IN Interior Z:IN Square Gangnam showroom in Nonhyeon-dong, Seoul, attended by the competition winners and LG Hausys officials.
The competition was open to university and graduate students nationwide, with idea submissions accepted from last December through the end of this January across two categories: △Interior design of a residential space for oneself, and △Living product design using LG Z:IN materials.
A total of 412 ideas were submitted over the two months, drawing enthusiastic interest from design students across the country, and 44 of them were selected as winners. Through a first-round internal review and a second-round review by outside experts, LG Hausys selected one Grand Prize winner (10 million won in prize money), two Gold Prize winners (3 million won each), two Silver Prize winners (1 million won each), eight Bronze Prize winners (500,000 won each), and 31 Encouragement Prize winners (100,000 won each). The Grand, Gold, and Silver Prize winners are offered an LG Hausys internship (July–August 2021), and those who complete the internship with distinction are granted the privilege of qualifying for the second-round interview—bypassing the document screening and first-round interview stages—when applying through open recruitment.
The Grand Prize went to ‘Space Walk’ by Choi Da-min of Duksung Women’s University, which presents a new residential design for single-person households by arranging thin glass rods throughout a cramped 14-pyeong studio apartment to enable a variety of activities such as studying and exercising, while creating a dreamlike, space-like atmosphere. Accepting the Grand Prize at the ceremony, Choi Da-min said, “I focused on the social phenomenon of the rapidly increasing number of single-person households, and drawing inspiration from Van Gogh’s ‘The Starry Night,’ I used glass rods to make the studio space more radiant and to accommodate more multi-layered activities.”
Cheon Ha-bong, Executive Vice President and head of the LG Hausys Design Center, said, “We held our first design competition to widely promote LG Hausys’s vision for the interior business among university students—who are also our future customers—and to secure outstanding talent,” adding, “We plan to actively use these original and highly aesthetic winning entries in developing future LG Z:IN interior products and space concepts.”
Meanwhile, LG Hausys plans to continue the design competition by expanding its scope not only domestically but also overseas, and to keep providing opportunities and support for students in related fields of study to demonstrate their design capabilities.

Overall Grand Prize – Space Walk, Choi Da-min With the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, the home is now expanding beyond a mere space for rest into a place for studying, working, shopping, hobbies, and exercise. In a small one-room space such as a studio apartment, it is difficult to divide the space. ‘Space Walk’ draws inspiration from the brushstrokes seen in Van Gogh’s ‘The Starry Night,’ creating a distinctive space by continuously connecting streamlined flows. By arranging thin glass rods in succession, it divides the space within a single room and, through a mosaic-like visual effect, psychologically expands the space.

Interior Design Category, Gold Prize – Healanda (A Healing Space by Your Side), Han Hye-ji Spending most of the day at home due to COVID-19, we have begun to do things at home that we never did before, such as home cafés and home theaters. ‘Healanda’ brings ‘gardening’ onto the veranda. It improves the drawbacks of growing plants on a veranda—pots that are too low to water easily and look cluttered because of their mismatched designs, and a floor that runs muddy every time you water—to complete a more refined and cozy veranda space. By combining a table for coffee or beer with the planters into one, it creates a single, uninterrupted, connected space.

Product Design Category, Gold Prize - LG Split & Cone Collection, Kim Si-won
The dining room of 2021 sits at the boundary between the kitchen and the living room, a space where diverse activities—dining, relaxing, reading, and socializing—overlap. The ‘LG Z:IN Split & Cone Collection’ is a product that lets you functionally customize the island table and lighting at the heart of the dining room to suit various indoor activities. Split, which reveals a hidden space when the island countertop is slid open, supports a range of activities suited to meals, tea time, and working from home, while Cone, a light fixture with a built-in smart LED, provides light colors appropriate to the situation and space.

Interior Design Category, Silver Prize - Cube Beyond Cube, Kim Hong-gu
In the era of untact, residential spaces are called upon to serve as multi-cultural spaces that handle not only schools and offices but also various cultural activities such as movies, exhibitions, and exercise. ‘Cube Beyond Cube’ is composed of square cube forms, allowing the size of the space to be expanded by adding rooms of the user’s desired size around a central core. By setting up openable and closable partitions within the different spaces, it creates flexible residential spaces of various forms.

Product Design Category, Silver Prize – PIXX, Joo So-young
As people spend more time at home, more of them are actively decorating their homes to suit their own individuality. ‘PIXX’ is a three-dimensional deco tile made of HI-MACS artificial marble, which users can attach to walls or mirrors in various shapes by selecting the concept, module, and pieces they want. With a magnetic function attached to all four edges, the remaining tiles can be easily arranged without hanging them on nails.
