Applying Color to Welfare Facilities for the Disabled
Samhwa Paints Industrial Co., Ltd. (CEO and President Oh Jin-soo) has signed a business agreement with the Korea Color Universal Design Association (Chairman Park Yeon-seon) for the research and development of color universal design for facilities serving people with developmental disabilities.
Earlier, last year the two companies signed a business agreement centered on color research for applying color universal design to spaces used by people with developmental disabilities and on developing a color guide tailored to the perspective of users (people with disabilities). Since then, based on surveys and research targeting residents of care facilities for people with developmental disabilities as well as overseas case studies, the companies planned the Color Universal Design (CUD) for facilities serving people with developmental disabilities and completed the color application.
This year, the companies are expanding this effort to develop a color universal design guide for people with disabilities who use community facilities. Beyond color development that takes into account the emotional impact on people with developmental disabilities, the initiative will expand to color development for those with weaker visual perception—such as the elderly with color vision deficiency and people with color weakness—with the goal of completing a comprehensive color guide for welfare facilities for the disabled.
A Samhwa Paint official said, “We have completed the color plan for the Bucheon Comprehensive Welfare Center for the Disabled, the first comprehensive center for people with disabilities established (in 1991) within Gyeonggi Province, and the space improvement project for the Gangdong Green Nare Welfare Center in Seoul, which supports vocational rehabilitation for people with disabilities, is now underway,” adding, “We will continue our color universal design business, which can be applied anywhere that seeks to enhance safety and convenience in the use of space and to foster emotional stability and positive behavioral change.”
