New video work ‘The City Genes’
Alternative Space LOOP presents ‘Fahrettin Örenli Solo Exhibition: The City Genes→The Bubble in the Mind’ through April 24.
Born in 1969, Fahrettin Örenli takes as his starting point the wild nature and the weighty political and economic issues that dominate eastern Turkey, the place where he was born and raised. Later, after relocating to Amsterdam in the Netherlands, the artist—having lived moving back and forth between two disparate cultures—defines himself as an ‘anartist.’ The anartist is a practiced form of the value of being an anarchism artist. This intersection of two different ethnicities and disparate cultures becomes a key element in his artistic practice.
In the new video work ‘The City Genes,’ sperm cells set out from London, pass through Amsterdam, arrive in Seoul, and burst apart. As demonstrated by the economic success of the many financial firms that relocated to Amsterdam in 2021 following Brexit, the work serves as a metaphor for the flow of global capital and the patriarchal solidarity surrounding it.
The large-scale installation ‘The Bubble in the Mind→Within Me, Within the City→Cryptocurrency’ speaks to the present condition in which human existence alienates and suffocates itself amid various circumstances—the pandemic, personal economic reasons, the pressure the city imposes, and more. The artist introduces to Seoul audiences a body of work that examines the still-operating social system of patriarchal colonialism and exposes, within his artistic practice, the errors it conceals. Admission is free, and viewing hours are daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Meanwhile, Alternative Space LOOP, located in Hongdae, is Korea’s first-generation alternative space and has carried out a diverse range of activities for the development of art and culture. Beyond the mission distinctive to alternative spaces—discovering and supporting talented, experimental artists with future potential—it has taken the lead from early on in introducing experimental, contemporary, and global currents in art and culture, grounded in wide-ranging exchange and networking with the domestic and international art worlds. 02-3141-1377
