‘Biomass Color-Coated Steel Sheet’ Applied for the First Time to a Mobile Modular School

Supply of Low-Carbon, Eco-Friendly Biomass Color-Coated Steel Sheet Certified in the U.S.

POSCO Steeleon has applied ‘Biomass Color-Coated Steel Sheet’ to a mobile modular school for the first time in Korea.

Biomass Color-Coated Steel Sheet is a product that uses biomass extracted from plants, microorganisms and the like—instead of fossil fuels that emit greenhouse gases—in the paint, which is a key raw material used in its production. In a test conducted this past February by Beta Laboratory, a testing and evaluation body of the U.S. certification agency UL, it recorded 26%, demonstrating performance that meets eco-friendly standards. Because it uses ‘PosMAC,’ POSCO’s highly corrosion-resistant steel, as its base material, it is also strong against corrosion.

POSCO Steeleon supplies its Biomass Color-Coated Steel Sheet to Plan M, the leading manufacturer of mobile modular schools in Korea by market share. Plan M’s mobile modular schools are currently being deployed at ‘Green Smart Future School’ sites—a mid-to-long-term government project to improve the environment of aging schools in order to realize an eco-friendly future curriculum.

To build Green Smart Future Schools aimed at carbon neutrality, temporary classrooms must be installed during renovation work, and in keeping with the project’s purpose, modular schools featuring the low-carbon, eco-friendly Biomass Color-Coated Steel Sheet are being supplied. POSCO Steeleon explained that it may add antibacterial and antiviral functions to the Biomass Color-Coated Steel Sheet in the future.

POSCO Steeleon announced that, starting with the modular classrooms at Banyawol Elementary School in Daegu completed this past September, it plans to work with Plan M to supply modular classrooms featuring Biomass Color-Coated Steel Sheet to more than 100 schools by 2024. The company added that, with 25% of the roughly 25,000 elementary, middle and high schools nationwide having grown aged, the supply of modular classrooms to improve their environment is expected to increase.
