347 teams from 6 countries take part; a total of 6 teams selected as Gold Prize winners

Ideas incorporating IoT, multimedia, DIY, and traditional patterns shine

Hyundai Elevator has announced the results of an idea competition it held from August in six countries—Korea, China, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Türkiye—under the theme of “Smart Elevators for the Era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.”

A total of 347 teams (individuals) took part in the competition, with a wide range of applicants—from children and members of the general public to professional designers—depicting the elevator of the future through their fresh and original ideas.

The six Gold Prize–winning teams selected from each country are: △Gat-Ple (Choi Gyu-jin / Korea) △Su-Ying (素影, Zhao Changhai and Liu Lei / China) △National Concept Design (Eka Olia Lumintar and Kilda Herambang / Indonesia) △Disco (Le Thi Hai Duong and Nguyen Dao Thu Linh / Vietnam) △The Floating Bunga Raya (Mohd Nizam and Sujitan Binti / Malaysia) △Layer In Mood (Saner Ozturkler / Türkiye).

A total of about 135 million won in prize money will be awarded to 99 teams (individuals) in all, including the domestic Gold Prize winner (10 million won) and the overseas Gold Prize winners (five countries, USD 4,000 each).

Jo Jae-cheon, CEO of Hyundai Elevator, said, “Participants from all walks of life in our key overseas markets submitted a wide variety of fresh ideas, which showed us the strong interest users have in elevators,” adding, “We expect this competition to serve as an important momentum for expanding into global markets as we work toward becoming a global top-five player by 2030.”

The entries in this competition drew attention with designs that captured the distinctive character of each country. Su-Ying, the Chinese Gold Prize winner whose name means “white shadow,” sensuously expressed bamboo and lattice-window patterns through a play of light and shadow within the elevator space. Indonesia’s “National Concept Design” drew notice for capturing the sensibility of world-renowned Indonesian handicrafts, while Malaysia’s “The Floating Bunga Raya” incorporated the hibiscus, the country’s national flower, into its elevator design. Türkiye’s Gold Prize winner “Layer In Mood” earned high marks for creativity and practicality by presenting the possibility of user-driven design through a modular interior system.

The Internet of Things (IoT), multimedia, and DIY (products that let consumers make items themselves) were also among the major trends in this competition. Korea’s Gold Prize winner “Gat-Ple (Gather and Play)” links a streamlined display on the elevator ceiling with passengers’ smartphones to provide content such as customized information and mood-lifting games, while Vietnam’s Gold Prize winner “Disco” earned high praise for connecting the landing area and the elevator interior with an LED floor, offering passengers a space for new experiences and interaction.
