Standardizing Elevator-Robot Interworking
Hyundai Elevator has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Kakao Mobility to commercialize an elevator-robot interworking service.
The MOU covers the following: developing robot services in which humans and robots coexist, along with interworking standards that can be applied to buildings in general; launching a consultative body to strengthen technology; pursuing strategic collaboration in areas such as sales and promotion; laying the groundwork to lead the market by taking an early lead in user experience and data; and discussing cooperation across all aspects of vertical logistics within buildings.
At the heart of the interworking between elevators and delivery robots is the 'MIRI' service. MIRI, an advanced maintenance service that Hyundai Elevator launched last year, incorporates a wide range of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, including the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), cloud and big data, and robot interworking technology. Through these, it enables interworking between elevators and robots to provide services such as remote fault handling and inspection.
In fact, MIRI is a specialized technology drawing attention, having surpassed 33,000 installations in just over a year since its release, with the figure expected to exceed 45,000 by the end of this year. Once delivery robots enter the commercialization stage, attention on the MIRI service and its interworking system is expected to grow even further.
Cho Jae-cheon, CEO of Hyundai Elevator, emphasized, "This mutual cooperation with Kakao Mobility marks a turning point that will make elevator-robot interworking commonplace," adding, "We will build an ecosystem of delivery robot services that are free from the constraints of spatial movement, enabling robots to move beyond the limits of horizontal movement and travel freely even vertically."
Meanwhile, Hyundai Elevator is already providing robot delivery services—such as delivering medicines and pharmaceuticals as well as room service—at 14 sites, including Kakao's Pangyo Alphadom, Shinhan Bank's headquarters, Factorial Seongsu, the National Cancer Center, Yongin Severance Hospital, the Josun Hotel Haeundae, Hanwha Resort, and the Arco Hotel Daegu.
