Proceeds from Recycling IT Devices

On December 22 of last year, Dongkuk Steel Group held a ‘Donation Ceremony for the Honey Forest, Bee Forest Nectar-Tree Planting Project to Preserve the Bee Ecosystem’ at Ferrum Tower, its headquarters in Euljiro, and presented the Environmental Foundation with 20.604 million won in donations gathered through the DK Green Campaign.

Dongkuk Steel Group collected some 1,130 unused IT devices in total—including discarded mobile phones, laptops, tablets and aging PCs—from all of its affiliates, including Dongkuk Steel and Dongkuk CM, and, in collaboration with the used-ITC platform ‘Mintit,’ raised proceeds totaling 10.302 million won. Dongkuk Holdings then added a matching-grant donation of 10.302 million won, donating a combined 20.604 million won to the Environmental Foundation.

Dongkuk Steel Group’s donation will be used to support the Environmental Foundation’s ‘Honey Forest, Bee Forest’ campaign. Honey Forest, Bee Forest is a campaign that restores the bee ecosystem by planting nectar trees in urban areas. Nectar trees refer to trees from which bees can gather honey. As recent climate change has made the flowering periods of plants irregular and caused bee colonies to collapse, these are tree species for which the need for planting has grown in order to stabilize the bee ecosystem.

The ceremony was held with attendees including Kwak Jin-soo, Head of the Strategy Office at Dongkuk Holdings (Executive Vice President), and Jung Tae-yong, Secretary General of the Environmental Foundation. At the ceremony, Strategy Office Head Kwak Jin-soo said, “We are pleased to be able to support the Environmental Foundation’s meaningful campaign through ‘resource circulation’ activities, which are a core value of Dongkuk Steel Group’s eco-friendly electric arc furnace business,” adding, “We will continue to maintain and develop the Green Campaign going forward.”

The DK Green Campaign is a campaign that Dongkuk Steel—which makes steel products by recycling ferrous scrap (scrap metal)—has carried out every year since 2017 to promote the value of resource recycling.
