Lectures under the theme ‘Architecture in Between’
The ‘2020 Seoul Architecture Festival’ is being held through October 31, and this year it is taking place primarily as a non-contact online event via the Seoul Architecture Festival website in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
This year’s festival theme, ‘Architecture in Between’ (틈새건축), is centered on ‘presenting a new way of life’ and on sharing with citizens an architectural culture concerned with the in-between spaces, leftover corners, small spaces, and The Other that have rarely been given much attention.
Although the serious COVID-19 situation that has continued until recently has made it impossible to meet citizens in person, a variety of online exhibitions, architect lectures and talks, and job mentoring by architectural firms are being carried out through the Seoul Architecture Festival website.
The opening ceremony on October 16 announced the launch of the Seoul Architecture Festival and featured the award ceremonies for the 38th Seoul Architecture Award and the SAF University Student Idea Competition. From October 16, when the event begins, through October 31, various programs—including online exhibitions, lectures, and on-site videos—are being uploaded to the Seoul Architecture Festival website so that everyone can take part remotely, online, without visiting in person.
First, the exhibitions of the winning works of the △38th Seoul Architecture Award and the △11th SAF University Student Summer Architecture School, which began accepting entries this past May, along with the ‘2019 Seoul Architecture Award Grand Prize Special Exhibition,’ are being presented in a vivid video format. In addition, related exhibitions tied to projects that promote architectural culture are being held, including the winning works of the △Architecture Storytelling Competition, the △Hangang Architecture Imagination Exhibition, and the △Social Architecture, Post-COVID Competition, as well as the △Urban Architecture Innovation Exhibition and △Seoul, an Architectural Stroll.
Furthermore, for those majoring in architecture and citizens interested in the field, the festival offers ‘Architecture Insideterview’ (working title), which delivers the vivid, firsthand voices of design firms; ‘Open Lectures,’ through which one can discover the value of a new way of life in Seoul through architectural culture; and a talk on ‘Architecture in Between’—reflecting the interests of Seoul’s citizens—featuring the Seoul Architecture Festival’s Artistic Director and experts from various fields.
The ‘Architecture Culture Tour,’ which lets citizens experience firsthand the in-between spaces of Seoul and highly refined architectural works while hearing the stories behind the architecture, will once again be held this year with small groups of participants on a variety of courses for each session.
