The Art of Tomorrow Exhibition

Online applications accepted through January 11

The Seoul Arts Center (CEO Yoo In-taek), together with the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), is accepting online submissions through January 11, 2021 for the <2021 New Media Art Open Call – The Art of Tomorrow Exhibition>.

The Seoul Arts Center, which is organizing the event, will select twelve works that harness media technology to showcase rich ‘expressiveness’ and creative ‘methods of delivering a message.’ An exhibition composed of the winning works will run from March 31 to April 18, 2021 at the Hangaram Design Museum of the Seoul Arts Center. Three of the twelve winning works will be chosen as the top prize winners, and their artists will receive an award and prize money of 5 million won.

As the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic spreads a non-contact culture, the field of art is also seeing a wide range of active experiments that combine art with technology. Through this competition, the Seoul Arts Center and KEPCO aim to present the diverse attempts of visual art that converge with science and technology. They plan to seek out artists who ponder the future of convergence art, and to present, through the exhibition, a venue where these artists can share their reflections with the public. This competition seeks to reveal the current state of convergence art and to spotlight works that can offer direction as ‘evolved’ works of art.

When looking at unfamiliar forms of artwork fused with technology, you may have felt both curiosity and a sense of uncertainty about how to appreciate them. This competition begins from that very question in the public’s mind. This open call and exhibition aim to introduce ‘new media art’—which can feel rather difficult to grasp—to the public from an artistic perspective, creating an opportunity to understand it together. The organizers plan to find artists who take on the challenge of expanding visual art and to present their work in an exhibition that unpacks it in an accessible way, allowing it to resonate with audiences. In doing so, this will serve as an opportunity for visitors to easily approach new media art. 02-580-1600
