In line with seismic design standards that are being progressively strengthened due to earthquakes across the Korean Peninsula, the Canada Wood Korea Office is holding the "2021 Wood Construction Seismic Design Workshop" for architects, structural engineers, and wood construction experts.
The "2021 Wood Construction Seismic Design Workshop," to be held on September 10 at Busan BEXCO, is divided into two sessions. In △Session 1 (Mass Timber), Jong-Beom Joo, a Canadian structural engineer who has carried out building structural design projects in North America for over 20 years and was in charge of the structural design, will provide a structural analysis—centered on the lateral load resisting system—of the Jinju City Community Center, the first structure in Korea to be built with a Nail Laminated Timber (NLT) roof. Chang-Min Yoo, the CEO who led the construction, will introduce the NLT panel fabrication and construction process.
In △Session 2 (Light-Frame Wood Structure), Gak-Kyeong Kim, a domestic wood-structure specialist and structural engineer, will introduce the commentary on the small-scale building structural standards for wood structures [KDS 41 90 33]—jointly developed with Canada Wood—along with a wood shear wall calculator, and will demonstrate the process of performing structural design for a light-frame wood house using these materials. Jeong-Ro Park, a domestic Ph.D. in engineering and director, will give a lecture on the introduction, fabrication, and construction process of the Midply load-bearing walls at Maple Village, carried out as a Canada Wood demonstration project.
The Canada Wood Korea Office said, "We hope for the active participation of those interested in seismic design of wood structures based on Mass Timber and the small-scale building structural standards," adding, "This workshop will be prepared and conducted in strict compliance with the quarantine authorities' guidelines to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, and will be held both online and offline."
