Running through December 30 at Gallery O'NewWall; a space-styling and product-development project
Themed ‘Soyo: A Life at Play with Traditional Patterns,’ featuring designs from promising companies
Through December 30, the pop-up store for the Korea Craft & Design Foundation’s 2022 Traditional Pattern Utilization Space-Styling and Product-Development Project will be held at Gallery O'NewWall, located in Wonseo-dong, Jongno-gu.
Organized under the theme ‘Soyo: A Life at Play with Traditional Patterns,’ this project (directed by Byun Hong-cheol, CEO of Greywall) brings together leading domestic product-design studios and manufacturers of fashion and everyday goods to present design products that make use of traditional patterns. The point worth noting is that Korean patterns, reinterpreted with a modern sensibility, have been incorporated as the key design on each company’s best-selling flagship products.
Among those taking part in product development, ▲Hagahi is a collection brand by designer Ha Ga-hui that expresses creative inspiration drawn from traditional patterns through Oriental embroidery and prints, producing ready-to-wear clothing aimed at the individuality-conscious MZ generation. ▲Incroma JVR, a specialist in household goods, developed and unveiled tumblers that harmonize the premium texture of stainless steel with pastel-tone colors. The repeating motifs of the traditional patterns add vitality to the products, making them a perfect fit for outings at a time when ‘car camping’ and camping are all the rage. ▲Fountain Studio created mobiles and base plates that are ideal as interior accessories. The movement of the mobiles as they sway in the wind or at the touch of a hand visualizes the motion of butterflies freely at play in nature, and is expected to offer moments of rest and meditation amid busy daily life.
As cultural content that fully captures Korea’s distinctive sentiment plays an increasingly active role on the world stage, the Korea Craft & Design Foundation-backed 2022 Traditional Pattern Utilization Space-Styling and Product-Development Project has been leading the modern reinterpretation of traditional patterns, with participation by promising domestic designers growing significantly each year.
Planned as an exhibition in the form of a pop-up store, this event is expected to serve as a catalyst for strengthening the sustainable self-sufficiency and competitiveness of design products utilizing traditional patterns in domestic and overseas markets. The accompanying online website (soyodesign.kr) provides content related to the exhibited products, which can be purchased through the linked Naver Store.
