The Past, Present and Future of Cheonan Urban Regeneration

The Cheonan City Urban Regeneration Support Center announced that it successfully wrapped up the ‘2022 Cheonan Urban Regeneration Fiesta’ on October 19, held in the area around the underground shopping arcade at Cheonan Station.

Held under the theme ‘Connecting the Past, Present and Future of Cheonan City’s Urban Regeneration,’ the festival was organized to document the urban regeneration projects currently underway in Cheonan City and to chart the direction of future urban regeneration efforts.

For the ‘past’ content, the center presented the ‘Cheonan City Urban Regeneration Archiving Exhibition’ as well as the ‘Real Cheonan?’ exhibition, in which four local artists (Choi Gyu-sik, Han Ji-su, Lee Jeong-sik and Park Ju-eun) expressed through their works what they personally observed and reflected on around Cheonan Station.

For the ‘present’ content, the ‘2nd Cheonan City Urban Management Policy Debate’ was held to explore management measures for the city’s urban regeneration projects and for areas removed from redevelopment zoning. Presenters Yang Min-gu, Secretary General of the Jeju Urban Regeneration Support Center, and Lee Wang-gi, Senior Research Fellow at the Incheon Institute, delivered lectures on post-project management measures for urban regeneration and on the diagnosis and proposal of policies for managing low-rise residential areas, respectively.

With the participation of Won Jong-min, head of Cheonan City’s Urban Regeneration Division, along with experts, relevant stakeholders and many citizens, the event assessed the current issues facing Cheonan City’s urban regeneration and built a consensus for establishing policies and identifying alternatives.

For the ‘future’ content, the ‘Cheonan City Urban Regeneration Project Future Exhibition’ was held. Through the exhibition, visitors were able to take in at a glance the plans and progress of Cheonan City’s urban regeneration projects across districts, including the Cheonan Station area, the Namsan District and the Bongmyeong District.

Lee Kyung-hwan, head of the Cheonan City Urban Regeneration Support Center, who organized the event, said, “It is meaningful to hold this first archiving exhibition, which shares the journey that the center and residents have taken together,” adding, “We will actively provide support to revitalize the local community and lay the groundwork for sustainable urban regeneration.”
