Support for heat-shielding paint and coating

As part of the ‘2024 Cool Rooftops with Architects (Cool Roof Support Project),’ KCC and the Seoul Association of Architects applied heat-shielding paint to the roofs and rooftops of senior centers, daycare centers, and other facilities vulnerable to heat waves. KCC provided the paint and paint coating expertise at the work sites, while the Seoul Association of Architects selected the locations in need of cool roof support and deployed the coating personnel, working in collaboration.

The Cool Roof Support Project is a social contribution activity that applies heat-shielding paint to reflect solar heat, thereby lowering roof surface and indoor temperatures while simultaneously reducing the energy needed for cooling, in order to help people endure summer heat waves.

Taking this year’s unusually hot summer as a lesson, KCC and the Seoul Association of Architects selected the sites in need of cool roof work in advance and carried out the work preemptively, so that the cool roof benefits—such as reduced indoor temperatures and energy savings—could take effect regardless of when the heat begins next year. Although heat-shielding paint is usually applied in the spring, this measure was taken to prevent the unexpected situation in which schedules are thrown off by rain or other factors, resulting in the work being carried out only after an early heat wave has already begun.

KCC’s heat-shielding paint ‘Spotan Top Coat (Energy)’ was used in this cool roof project. ‘Spotan Top Coat (Energy)’ is a product whose functionality has been recognized, including obtaining a heat-shielding performance certificate from the U.S. CRRC (Cool Roof Rating Council). It can be applied to a variety of surfaces such as concrete and steel, making it suitable for a wide range of uses from residential to commercial facilities—not only ordinary homes, but also general buildings such as office buildings, apartments, retail spaces, and schools, as well as storage tanks, outdoor structures, and factory roofs. With excellent weather resistance and good workability, it is a product that even ordinary people can apply using brushes, rollers, and the like.
