Realizing safety colors through its in-house developed 'Color Universal Design'
KCC has joined hands with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries to develop a color design aimed at creating a pleasant environment and strengthening safety at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Ulsan headquarters.
KCC announced that it has agreed to develop environmental and safety-related color designs together with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to that end. The signing ceremony, held in the large conference room on the 6th floor of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Shipbuilding Management Building, was attended by some 30 officials from both companies, including HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Shipbuilding Business CEO Cho Min-soo, Vice President Jeon Seung-ho, Senior Managing Director Kim Jung-bae, Managing Director Lee Kyung-gu, and Managing Director Song Dong-ho, along with KCC Design Center Head and Managing Director Maeng Hee-jae and Ulsan Sales Office Head and Managing Director Cho Seung-hee. On this day, the two companies discussed ways to enhance the safety and pleasant working environment of the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Ulsan headquarters site as well as their mutual brand value through color design, and reaffirmed their commitment to cooperation. Through this agreement, KCC plans to collaborate in various areas, including ▲research and production of an environmental and safety color design manual for the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Ulsan headquarters, ▲support for interior and exterior color design of buildings and facilities, and ▲branding and promotional content design. In particular, following the signing of the agreement, the two companies plan to closely analyze the environmental and safety points of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' hull-fabrication (steel-plate) factory site, pursue customized color designs and corresponding product-specification improvements, and cooperate actively to create a site environment that offers workers a high degree of safety and psychological stability. A hull-fabrication factory refers to a plant that cuts, processes, and welds the steel plates that form the framework of a ship to fabricate hull structures.
KCC's policy is to actively apply the 'Color Universal Design (CUD)' philosophy and know-how of its Color & Design Research Center to enhance safety at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' sites and help create a better working environment. Color Universal Design is a design technique that uses color combinations and differences in brightness and saturation so that anyone can easily recognize colors regardless of disability, age, or cultural background. At industrial sites, it can help prevent accidents and encourage rapid responses, while also providing psychological stability, thereby helping to improve workers' safety and satisfaction.
A KCC official said, "We find it very meaningful to be able to enhance safety at industrial sites and contribute to creating a more pleasant working environment through our collaboration with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries," adding, "Going forward, we will take the lead in creating sustainable environments and practicing ESG (environmental, social, and governance) management by providing differentiated color solutions to a variety of industrial sites and public facilities based on KCC's unique eco-friendly paints and color design capabilities."
Meanwhile, building on its know-how of applying Color Universal Design (CUD) to a variety of spaces—such as safe exit routes at CGV movie theaters, the underground parking lot of a Hillstate apartment complex, and the transfer guidance system at Seomyeon Station in Busan—KCC plans to expand the application of CUD and eco-friendly paint solutions not only to industrial sites but also to a variety of areas such as transportation and public facilities, realizing safer and more sustainable design values.
