Antibacterial coating technology that reduces harmful bacteria using indoor lighting

Awarded ‘KL Antibacterial Certification,’ to be applied to all future LX Z:IN door products

LX Hausys has applied an antibacterial coating that reduces harmful bacteria using indoor lighting to the handles of its door products, and its entire handle lineup has earned antibacterial certification.

In connection with this, LX Hausys announced that 13 types of handles applied to ‘LX Z:IN doors’ have obtained the ‘KATRI LABEL (KL) Antibacterial Certification’ from the Korea Apparel Testing & Research Institute (KATRI), a testing and certification body.

The ‘KATRI LABEL (KL)’ is a system that verifies and certifies that laundry-related products and other manufactured goods possess specific functions such as sterilization, antibacterial properties, and deodorization. This marks the first time the Korea Apparel Testing & Research Institute has granted antibacterial certification to a door product handle.

LX Z:IN door handles feature a visible-light photocatalytic antibacterial coating on their surface. When exposed to light (visible light), the photocatalyst is activated to reduce harmful bacteria. Its greatest advantage is that antibacterial performance can be secured simply by having a light source above a certain level of illumination.

In fact, functional tests conducted by KATRI showed that when LX Z:IN door handles were exposed to indoor LED lighting (illumination range: 1,000 lux) for 24 hours, both E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus—harmful bacteria—were reduced by more than 99%.

As a result, applying an antibacterial function to door handles, which the hand inevitably touches when opening and closing a door, is expected to enhance the prevention of bacterial infections transmitted through the hands.

Meanwhile, LX Z:IN doors are already equipped with finger-protection hinges that prevent hands from being caught between the door leaf and frame, as well as a safety handle specification whose lever can rotate 180 degrees to keep the door from closing completely. With the addition of the antibacterial handle function this time, the doors now offer hygiene as well as safety.

An LX Hausys official said, “As hygiene management becomes increasingly important in everyday life, demand for door products with antibacterial functions is expected to continue growing,” adding, “Handles with antibacterial performance will be applied to all LX Z:IN door products released in the future.”
