DDP <Ice Cream, I Scream> Exhibition, Through August 20
A story of cold ice cream falling into hot love
‘Who is the one who makes me melt?’ Inspired by melting ice cream, ‘Kimkim Lab’s’ exhibition (hereafter Ice Cream) will be held at DDP Gallery Moon through August 20.
The exhibition is largely composed of a viewing zone, a resting zone, and a hands-on space. Upon entering the exhibition hall, sculptural works shaped like a large melted ice cream greet visitors. It consists of a space where visitors can draw the works themselves, cushions to sit and rest on, character dolls, and more.
In the exhibition hall, rows of cute ice cream character figures with eyes, noses, and mouths stand atop videos in a variety of colors. It gives the sense that the ice cream is alive and moving. In the viewing zone, ice cream art toys, dolls, and objets are displayed on monitors and tablet PCs, showing the works in an even more lively way. The resting zone is arranged with ice cream cushions and large dolls so that visitors can touch the works directly and rest on top of them. The hands-on space is set up so that visitors can draw their own ice cream within the exhibition hall. The pictures drawn by visitors are displayed alongside the works, offering visitors the chance to participate directly in the creative activity and communicate with the artist.
Kimkim Lab, the artist who planned this exhibition, participated in ‘YCK2016’ in 2016 and was selected as one of 40 designers. In 2017, the artist held a solo exhibition at the invitation of Hong Kong’s ‘Taipo Mega Mall’ and continues to be active at home and abroad through numerous fairs and solo exhibitions.
The exhibition began with the wordplay of ‘Ice cream’ and ‘I Scream.’ The artist personified ice cream and composed the exhibition so that visitors could recall warm memories of love, posing the following question.
One day, a cold ice cream that had been living an ordinary life found someone it liked. The greater its feelings for the person it liked grew, the more warmth was added, and the ice cream gradually melted. Will the ice cream’s ending be a tragedy? Or a happy ending?
Have we ever melted like ice cream in our lives? If we search our memories, we experience melting when we are in love. Sometimes our hearts melt away as we fall in love, and sometimes our bodies melt and disappear in pain. Sweetly melting, at some moment we come to fear a love that burns up everything we have. Should we not love because we are afraid of melting?
Artist Kimkim Lab describes the meaning of the exhibition, saying, “Whenever love begins, and whenever I face the end of that love, I hesitate. But through these cute characters, I want to convey that even in those moments of melting and pain, you were in fact so radiant and beautiful.”
