Performance of 33 dB for light-weight and 34 dB for heavy-weight impact sound far exceeds existing standards
‘Decoupling’ method that separates upper and lower materials is the key
Monstek Co., Ltd. (CEO Chae Chang-hyun), a company specializing in sound insulation materials, announced that it has completed the development of an industry-leading Grade 1 inter-floor sound insulation material. Monstek's new sound insulation material demonstrated outstanding performance of 33 dB for light-weight impact sound and 34 dB for heavy-weight impact sound, results that far exceed the current Grade 1 standard of 37 dB or below.
Under current housing construction standards, the light-weight and heavy-weight impact sound of each inter-floor slab must be 49 dB or below. Performance is classified into Grade 1 (37 dB or below), Grade 2 (41 dB or below), Grade 3 (45 dB or below), and Grade 4 (49 dB or below). Monstek's new technology demonstrates performance that far surpasses the highest Grade 1 standard, drawing intense interest from the industry.
The core technology of this innovative sound insulation material lies in applying a ‘decoupling’ method that separates the upper and lower materials to effectively block the transmission of vibration noise. In addition, it offers the advantages of preventing floor sagging and providing more than three times the insulation effect of conventional methods.
Monstek's new construction method is known to be able to omit the existing foam concrete process, shortening the construction period by about 10 days. This serves as a major attraction for construction companies, and the technology is currently receiving interest from many builders.
A company official explained, “We are the only ones with technology that can address inter-floor noise using the material alone,” adding, “Unlike other technologies that raise costs while reducing noise only slightly, our technology absorbs and attenuates inter-floor noise.” The official further added, “We are prepared to deploy the technology immediately upon reaching an agreement with a construction company,” and “We can ship enough for 10,000 to 20,000 households.”
Monstek is currently applying for a patent on this technology and is preparing to obtain a field certification from LH (Korea Land and Housing Corporation). LH and the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology are the two institutions in Korea that officially certify inter-floor noise performance, and obtaining floor structure certification documents from them is expected to further enhance the technology's credibility.
The issue of inter-floor noise has recently emerged as one of the biggest concerns in the residential environment. Major construction companies such as Hyundai Engineering & Construction, Samsung C&T, GS Engineering & Construction, and DL E&C have already been certified for Grade 2 or higher inter-floor noise blocking technology.
