As zero-energy building design becomes mandatory and window insulation performance standards are tightened, demand for high-performance glass and windows is expected to rise even more sharply. In response, Hankuk Glass launched its triple low-E glass 'XTN145II' this past May using purely domestic new technology.
'Triple low-E glass' refers to glass coated with three layers of a silver film. The triple low-E glass developed by Hankuk Glass uses a new coating technology based on a special nano process, delivering the world's best insulation performance while simultaneously achieving optical performance such as color.
When 'XTN145II' is applied to the metal window frames commonly used in commercial and public buildings, a window thermal transmittance of less than 1.2 W/㎡K is achievable with double glazing alone. As a result, it can meet the forthcoming, tightened Grade 2 window energy-efficiency standard, making it the optimal glass for public buildings. Aesthetically, with a low reflectance of 25% and a neutral color, it is also the exterior glass best suited to the trends of modern architecture.
In addition, with a solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) of 0.2—one of the lowest levels in Korea—it effectively blocks solar heat entering the interior from outside, greatly reducing the cooling load that is a major issue in commercial buildings. In line with the increasingly stringent energy-saving performance requirements for commercial buildings, 'XTN145II' can be called the optimal glass solution for zero-energy buildings, reducing heating loads through its world-leading insulation performance as well as cooling loads through its low solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC).
A Hankuk Glass official said, "In the past, when Hankuk Glass was part of Europe's Saint-Gobain group, we had experience importing and supplying triple low-E glass (Xtreme) from Europe. However, overseas triple low-E glass was excessively expensive relative to its performance, and it fell short of meeting Korea's tightened insulation standards. The newly developed XTN applies a special nano process to deliver superior insulation and solar heat gain performance tailored to domestic standards, so it can be seen as a product one step more advanced than existing overseas products." The official added, "The new process, developed for the first time in Korea, is currently pending patent, and based on this new technology we will continue to develop excellent new products going forward and expand our product lineup." 02-3706-9114
