Daelim Bath has developed and unveiled Korea's first cleaning device set for ostomy patients, aiming to help those with a colostomy or urostomy go out and take part in social activities with ease.
An ostomy is an artificial anus created by making an opening on the surface of the abdomen and fixing a portion of the intestine in place, for patients who are unable to have normal bowel movements after treatment for conditions such as rectal or colorectal cancer. Ostomy patients must regularly empty and clean the drainage pouch worn on the outside of the body. The proportion of people living with an ostomy is increasing every year, yet almost no restrooms nationwide are equipped with an ostomy cleaning device, leaving ostomy patients to face difficulties.
The ostomy cleaning device set developed by Daelim Bath consists of ▲a curved cleaning device ▲a dedicated cleaning hand shower ▲a universal faucet. First, the cleaning device features a curved front designed to fit closely against the affected area so that the ostomy pouch can be easily cleaned and replaced, and it is designed with clearance space at the bottom to allow easy wheelchair access. The ceramic surface is finished with a special coating that uses an anti-fouling glaze, making it easy to remove contaminants and keep the surface clean. The dedicated cleaning hand shower has a small spout that makes it easy to clean the narrow-mouthed ostomy pouch and the surrounding area. In addition, the universal faucet can rotate 90 degrees so it does not get in the way during use, and its ring-shaped handle allows stable, slip-free operation. On top of that, a shelf is fitted above the faucet, making it easy to hold necessary items such as drainage pouches. Daelim Bath plans to install and provide the ostomy cleaning device set in a wide range of places closely tied to daily life, such as university hospitals and public offices, for the convenience of ostomy patients.
Kim Hye-rim, Deputy General Manager of the Daelim Bath design team, said, “We developed the ostomy cleaning device set with a focus on equipping it with every function needed for the convenience of ostomy∙urostomy patients,” adding, “Going forward, Daelim Bath will continue to research and develop products that apply universal design to improve everyone's quality of life, regardless of physical disability.”
Meanwhile, the ostomy cleaning device set drew considerable attention for its convenient and stable design at the 2023 Home Care, Rehabilitation & Welfare Exhibition and the Good Design (Korea) awards. 1588-1952
