Amid growing interest in personal hygiene brought on by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, Hyundai HCN has launched ‘LED Antibacterial Lighting,’ which uses lighting to sterilize indoor spaces.

‘LED Antibacterial Lighting’ is a product that recreates the disinfecting effect of sunlight through indoor lighting. Using visible-light wavelengths, it sterilizes various viruses, bacteria, and harmful germs while also inhibiting their proliferation.

In addition, ‘LED Antibacterial Lighting’ offers both high sterilizing power and safety. In a sterilization test conducted by ICR, an accredited testing and certification body, it demonstrated approximately 80% sterilization efficacy within 12 hours, and it also passed IEC62471, the standard of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), in a biological safety test.

Conventional sterilizing devices that use ultraviolet light rely on rays in the UVC range, which can be harmful to the human body such as the skin and retina and therefore require caution from users; however, ‘LED Antibacterial Lighting’ ensures safety by using blue light with a 405 nm wavelength that is harmless to the human body. Furthermore, by applying an in-house-developed ballast, the product allows users to selectively turn on either a regular light or a sterilizing light through switch operation. This is the only such feature among domestic products, and its utility model right (a type of intellectual property right) registration has been completed.

Hyundai HCN has continuously secured market share in the home living sector, centered on LED lighting and household appliances. As consumer demand for hygiene increased with the recent spread of COVID-19, the company established a differentiation strategy of adding sterilization and disinfection functions to its existing products, and planned ‘LED Antibacterial Lighting’ in collaboration with Login Digital, an LED specialist company.
